Great For Open Helmets - Ryan   Recommended by Reviewer: Yes
Pros: Great Sound, firmware upgradable, Great Microphone Even In Wind With Open Helmet
    Cons: No FM Radio, Price

I chose this headset for its superior sound quality over the Sena SMH10R. I primarily wanted a headset that I could use to listen to music on my solo commutes, and secondarily for communication with one other rider for an upcoming trip.Bike I'm riding a '94 BMW R1100RS with a very low windshield so I get absolutely NO cover from the wind.Helmet HJC CL-17 Closed Face Helmet I actually did not purchase on compacc.com because I wanted to go to the dealer and see which of my two top choices had more of the features I was looking for. My top two choices were the UClear HBC200HD and the new SENA SMH5-FM. The dealer did not have the SMH5-FM, so I was forced to compare speakersound quality with the SMH10R. Sound Quality While neither speaker would qualify as a winner for any audiophile's home headset, I understand that more volume is needed for the open road and less detail can be detected in the audio with wind noise while at speed. This said, the HBC200HD wins easily. The Sena sounded very tinny, especially when turning up the volume. The UClear HBC200HD had the volume and sound clarity I wanted for listening to music on my commute. Microphone Quality I LOVE that the microphones actually sit under the helmet padding on your forehead. They are so small I can't even tell that they're there. I've opened my helmet while riding at 60 mph and the caller could not hear any wind noise...only my voice along with occasional clicking noises when I shift gears. Aside from the ear padding protruding slightly more than with an empty helmet, I can't tell that the headset is there when putting on my helmet.Small Mic CON - I believe that the headsets - Both ear bud and in-helmet designs - need to be properly installed with the microphones spaced according to the instruction and pressed against your forehead in order to work properly. I tried calling people while driving in my vehicle using the earbuds as a bluetooth headset without a helmet on and had complaints that people could not understand me. If you were thinking you could use this as a multi-purpose headset without a helmet on, you're mistaken. Overall I love this headset, but would love to have FM radio included. That would make this thing the perfect headset. If you are more concerned with sound and microphone quality than extra features like FM Radio, then this headset is for you. If an FM Radio is a must and sound quality is not a primary concern, go with one of the new SENA headsets.Other Notes This thing will work in any helmet open or closed face without issues. This includes the brain buckets that do not cover your ears. I get the best sound quality for listening to music while wearing ear plugs on my closed face helmet and turning the sound all the way up to compensate. It seems to drown out the high-pitched wind noise and make it possible for a wider range of frequencies to get through without causing damage to my hearing. I primarily listen to NPR on my commutes, so I was able to get around the lack of FM radio by using an app on my Galaxy S3 Smartphone to listen to NPR podcasts. I have not used this in intercom mode yet, but I will try and report back when I do. I've owned the UClear for about 1 month.
