Hey guys this is Reuben with Competition Accessories and welcome to our video review of the all new Michelin Pilot Road 4 tires. This tire is replacing the Pilot Road 3, falls right into that sport touring category that is ever increasingly popular. Everything from pure sport bike guys who are looking for a higher mileage tire that are going to last longer than a super sport tire to guys on big touring bikes. Now the Pilot Road 3s were one of the most innovative tire technologies we have seen in terms on how they have actually designed the tread and how it performed in wet weather conditions. The Pilot Road 4 is taking those similar design approaches and incorporating some other unique features into the tires to give them exceptional wet weather performance while also increasing the tire life. They have actually gone with a Silica infused rubber compound on these tires and they are claiming that they are going to last 20% longer than the Pilot Road 3s did which is a significant improvement if you consider what 20% percent means over the life of the tire. So you might be paying a little bit more for a tire but getting a tire that is going to perform well and last a long time and your going to stretch those dollars a little bit further even though the initial investment is higher. Now looking at the actual tread pattern they have actually changed it quite a bit from the Pilot Road 3. They still use what they call their XST Sipe technology, that is the tiny little sipes you see with these reservoirs dotted throughout the tire and those help clear water away from the tread and they give the tire a good contact patch when it is wet out. They have done something unique on the front tire they are calling it the XST Plus which are these cross sipes that run across along the tread which is very similar to what we saw on the Pilot Road 3s. They provide very god wet weather performance very good braking especially on all kinds of surfaces. But one thing that was always a bit of concern when you have all these sipes in the tread of a tire is even wear. When your under a high load in a corner your flexing each bit of rubber individually since there is basically cuts in the tread in those areas. What Michelin has done in those areas is they have actually reduced the square edge on both sides they are more rounded off if you will. So when it does flex it is not going to wear at uneven rates between the leading edge and the trailing edge. So these are designed to wear very evenly. Over the link of the life of the tire which is very nice. Now these tires are also going to be available in three different versions and that is definitely something you want to be aware of. The standard version is going to be fantastic for most middle weight bikes whether your on a sport bike or something like a Ninja 650 or a sport touring bike that is in the lighter weight category. If your on a larger bike then you are going to go with something called the GT version, which they use a different type of construction method in the rear tire and it kind of combines bias ply and radial tire technologies to give you a more stiff carcase for a big touring bike or if you are riding two up you are going to need something that is a little bit stiffer to give you better stability on the road so its actually going to be standard equipment on the BMW 1200 RT for example. So if you are riding a big touring bike like that you might want to look for the GT Version. Last but not least there is going to be a trail version as well despite it being called a trail version it is a 100% on road tire but it is designed for large adventure touring bikes which are going to be spending all their time on the pavement. If you have something like the Big BMW 1200 GS Adventure or any other large adventure touring bikes then this tire is going to be the one you want to go with. Now the tread in the trail version does use the softer compound in the rear. Now these are a dual-compound tire whether you get the standard or the GT or the trail version. But the difference with the trail version is they use the same softer compound in the front also in the rear. On the standard and GT versions you actually have a softer compound on the front, the sides are going to be the softest of all. Then the center on the rear is going to be harder than the center on the front on the standard and the GT version. What that does is it provides a very even wear pattern across or along the tire itself. These tires have been tested from 23 degrees Fahrenheit to over a 113 degrees Fahrenheit so they have definitely done their homework to make sure they are going to perform in all types of weather conditions. Obviously the biggest point of focus on the Pilot Road 4s is the wet weather performance and they will do very well. You can check out the Pilot Road 4s on our website at competitionaccesories.com. Information and Details about the Michelin Pilot Road 4 GT Tires - 2CT Dual Compound - Front
made by Michelin
The Michelin Pilot Road 4 GT tire uses Patented 2AT technology to provide maximum stability for GT-class bikes with the same new technologies featured on the Pilot Road 4, including the same tread pattern. A stiffer casing provides extra stability for GT-class bikes and 2-up riding with luggage.

The new industry standard for all-around sport touring use, the Michelin Pilot Road 4 has superior wet-weather braking performance compared to the leading competitive sport touring tires on both pavement and slippery surfaces, and lasts 20% longer than Michelin's top selling Pilot Road 3 tires in results from the 2013 third-party commissioned tests conducted at the Dektra Test Centre in Ladoux France. The Pilot 4 also grips the road across a wide range of riding conditions and temperature ranges (23 F to 113F).

Stops Faster
Thanks to the new XST+, new Michelin Pilot Road 4 tires stop faster on wet roads than the leading competitive sport touring tires. In fact, third party commissioned tests prove it. The new Michelin Pilot Road 4 stopped 17% shorter than the leading sport touring tire competitors on wet pavement and 24% shorter on a wet slippery surface. All of which means, riding in the rain on Pilot Road 4 tires should feel more safe and more secure, and a lot less stressful.

  • The patented sipes and integrated reservoirs of Michelin's XST X-Sipe technology deliver exceptional grip on roads
  • Michelin developed XST+ that includes cross sipes to help improve wet weather braking, and adds chamfers to the sipes to help prevent abnormal wear under extreme conditions
  • New tread patterns were also developed for both front and rear to optimize wet and dry grip at all lean angles, and to promote uniform wear

Grips the road in all conditions
All new silica-charged rubber compounds were developed for the Michelin Pilot Road 4 tire. These compounds are specially formulated to provide excellent grip from 23°F to 113°F on a wide range of road surfaces, including painted lines and crosswalks, making it easier than ever for you to ride with confidence in virtually all conditions.

    Lasts longer
Thanks to 2CT technology, the new Michelin Pilot Road 4 tires lasts up to 20% longer than Michelin Pilot Road 3 tires. Over the long run, that adds up to fewer tire changes and a lower total cost of ownership.

  • The new Michelin Pilot Road 4 tires feature 2CT, dual compound technology with 100% silica compounds for the optimum balance between wet grip and longevity
  • The harder center compounds are designed to help promote a long tire life while the softer shoulder compounds provide extra grip when cornering

2AT provides extra stability for heavier loads
Whether you are riding your GT-class bike solo, 2-up or with luggage, you will appreciate the added stability provided by Michelin's new 2AT technology, your heavy touring bike will feel sable and secure in both straight line and cornering situations.

  • Michelin's patented new 2AT Dual Angle Technology is a revolutionary design architecture for motorcycle tires that delivers the stiffness you need for heavier touring bikes, and the comfort you desire for the long ride
  • 2AT uniquely combines elements of both bias and radial tire designs during the manufacturing process in order to deliver the best of both worlds: the extra load carrying capacity of bias and the riding pleasure of a radial.

PR4, A GREAT CHOICE - Freedom45   Recommended by Reviewer: Yes
Pros: Great rain tire, superb mileage, confident cornering
    Cons: Responds slower in transitions

Two weeks ago I completed a 6,000 mile ride to Canada and changed out my Pirellis for the Michelin PR4 on a BMW R1150RT prior to the trip.. I had hours of rain riding and some of it was severe. The PR4s were as advertised, superb wet weather handling and despite standing water there was never a hint of hydroplaning. Yesterday I got back from an 1,200 mile run to SW Colorado -- lots of curves.. The rear tire still has 332nds of tread and the front has used only 232nds since installation. Impressive. The Pirellis have a quicker transitions in corning but the Michelins were totally predictable and stable. Since most of my mileage is touring the trade off for higher mileage and wet weather performance will assure the next replacements will be PR4s. Kudos Michelin.

I travel 100 miles a day for work and have outfitted both my 02 gsxr 750 and my 01 gsxr 1000 built with these tires they show very litle wear after 7,000 miles. Incredible Grip in wet to extreme down pours. I was a firm on never changing from the RP3's but the 4's are 10x better. 100 the best tire for the money. WIl be buying 2 more sets come winter.

PR 4 GT Tires on R1200RT - r90beemer   Recommended by Reviewer: Yes
    Pros: Great touring tires
Cons: A slight howling sound at low speeds.

Purchased and have now put 2,000 miles on PR 4 GT tires on BMW 2005 R1200RT and am very impressed. From rolling up I 80 to riding the passes of the Sierra Nevada's I am very impressed. Replaced previous PR 2 tires with 40K of experience and have noticed improvement in tight corners. Do not have any wet weather experience as we are in a real drought in N. CA and won't see rain for many months yet. I had to make a special effort to get GT's over the standard grade for the RT and definitely do now think it was worth the effort find the GT's. The standards are built for lighter bikes from what I understand. Like all heavily siped tires you will notice more road noise than tires like the PR 2 tires but it disappears at regular speed. These are great tires.

Michelin Pilot Road 4 GT - Oscar HONDA CBR500R   SC Recommended by Reviewer: Yes
Pros: Excellent grip on my oil covered parking lot.
Cons: Hope Michelin lowers price more.

Took Pictures to share with fellow bikers at work. Received many compliments. In the past owned Pirelli and Continental tires on the Ninja 250. I was satisfied with both. Now that I have a Pilot 4 GT on my one year old Honda CBR, I am very happy with the way it handles in the curves. The original rear was a Dunlop made by Sumitomo in Japan on the 44th week of 2012. I was able to log 10,872 miles in one year and two months. I want to log more than 12,000 miles with these new Pilot Road 4 GT which were made in Spain on the 49th week of 2013. Hope that year was good luck for tire manufacturing. I am very satisfied so much, that I am looking forward to replacing my Sumitomo HTR on my HONDA suv to Michelin X ice. I once had thoughts that Michelin's were over rated. I have had a set of 4 Michelins on my 1995 Honda Civic before selling car to Aunt. Was satisfied with the way the Civic handles. I am now a believer in Michelins for auto, suv, and motorcycle apps. Will recommend to friends and families. Keep up the good work Michelin MAN.

Michelin Pilot Road 4 - 2CT Tires - James   OH Recommended by Reviewer: Yes
    Pros: Great tires
Cons: Apparent limited shortage of Michelin Pilot Road 4 GT tires, in my size, available from the manufacturer.

I've only had my new Pilot Road 4 - 2CT tires installed for about a week, but so far they have performed GREAT. If they are as good as the Pilot Road 3 tires -- and they are supposed to be even better --- I will be extremely well satisfied.

Very Good Tires - Devin   Recommended by Reviewer: Yes
Pros: Tires are great all around.
Cons: Not a dual sport tire.

I got these tires for my 2009 R1200GS about 2 months and 3000 miles ago. I mostly ride a daily commute on highway, but did take a 1200 mile trip on these tires. At this point they have NOT developed a flat spot in the center of the tread from highway use as other tires I have run did. On the GS they do feel a lot more nimble than a dual sport tire. Steering is a lot more responsive than on dual sport tires. Surprisingly these tires did really well on dry dirt roads. They are great in rain on paved roads. All around they are holding up well and I will be buying them again.

So far very happy with these tires. I've put on close to 1000 miles on them since I got them. I had Pilot Power 2, 2CT before these. I feel just as confident on the PR4 as I did on the PP2CT if not more confident on them.If you're looking for a great set of sport-touring tires, these are for you

Yay New tire - KitATX   TX Recommended by Reviewer: Yes
Pros: Round, great in all weather, no holes in it
    Cons: None yet

I had a Pilot Road 3 rear tire with about 2,000 miles on it that I planned to take on a big West Coast tour next month, but I somehow managed to run over a padlock key and put an unpluggable hole in it so I got the PR4. I had to wait a couple weeks to get it mounted, during which I was riding on a PR3 with a giant flat spot from doing 11,000 miles. The new PR4 has no flat spot, so that's great. It also has no hole in it from a key, so that's even greater. In all seriousness, this tire has had excellent grip in all conditions I've thrown at it so far, and I expect it to last a good, long, time based on the PR3s, but I only have a few hundred miles on it and can't say anything with real authority. I'll know more after my trip...

Michelin Pilot 4 - Bikeyron   OH Recommended by Reviewer: Yes
    Pros: Excellent feeling tire
    Cons: None Yet

I had replaced the original tires prior to Michelins with Conti's. I noticed a fishtail feeling from the Contis when I was on the highway and did many fixes to no avail. I never thought it could be the tires. I replaced them with the Michelin Pilot Road 4 tires and it doesn't fishtail anymore, feels confident in corners and am really happy with my FJR again. It is now a treat to ride again. I would recommend these to and cyclist. I don't know how they will wear yet, that is to be yet determined.

Michelin,s new PR4 GT's are keepers Tested on a 1500 mile road trip through the Ozark's, the 4's have much quicker turn in, and a sportier feel than the PR3's they replaced on my '04 FJR. Grippy in all situations ,great feel and feedback, and confidence inspiring Lower profile than 3's and slightly less ground clearance, but, livelier and more flickable performance.Improved tire life remains to be seen.

Quite surprised - Guy   CA Recommended by Reviewer: Yes
Pros: Excellent grip and lean angle capability
Cons: as with all Michelin PR series tires, there are no cons.

The PR series tire are a quality high mileage performance tire. This product will outperform it's predecessor the PR2. Handling is confident and trustworthy, lean angle grip is remarkable. We will have to see if they live up to their predecessor in mileage.

road 4's only - Bandit Jon   Recommended by Reviewer: Yes
Pros: Excellent wear, handle like a dream in wet or dry conditions, hot or cold temps
    Cons: none

I'm a daily rider in Florida. Weather here changes almost minute by minute. As winter is about over here, the coldest temps Ive riden with the Road 4 was about 47 or so. Of course, that was preceeded by a nice half-day of rain that I had to ride in. The Road4 is all you can ask for in confidence and margin of safety, as my riding habits sometimes are not the smartest or as safe as they should be. What I pay the county every year will attest I've run Road 3's for the last 3 years consecutively with no hiccups. These are every bit as good, and... longer lasting I know what's gonna be on my 1200 Bandit for the next couple of years. Dont be like me... Ride smarter. But do it on the Road4's. You wont regret a couple of good decisions

This is the 5th set of tires that I have had on my present bike. The OEM Dunlops were useless. I've used Michelins since I wore out the OEMs. These 4s transformed my bike. Cornering is smooth and effortless.

Pilot Road 4 - Buelligan   NC Recommended by Reviewer: Yes
Pros: Great in rain, good mileage so far
    Cons: none to date

I bought the Pilot Road 4's to replace my Dunlop Roadsmart 2's. I have been running Roadsmart 2's for a while and always loved the tire and got awesome mileage from them but I never liked how bad they flat spotted from a lot of highway riding which is what I do. I have had friends with Pilot Road 3's that got about the same mileage I was getting and their tires were not flat spotted as bad so I figured since these had come out claiming 20 more mileage and being Pilot Roads I figured I'd give them a shot since they were only a few dollars more.So far I have put 2000 miles on them and they still look brand new. They are more rounded than what I'm used to so that took some getting used to. They work awesome in the rain. I've rode in some pretty severe downpours and they didn't even miss a beat or make me lose any confidence when riding. I ride all the time so I am always riding in the rain and these are definitely on par with the Dunlops I came from which is what I was hoping. I've rode them down to about 20 degrees so far and they worked great there too. Overall so far my experience has been excellent. Great cold weather tire just take it easy till heated up but they won't feel dangerous until then. Great in the rain and dry. Great wear so far.

500 mi 2up weekend on my 08 FJR AE that had everything from scrub in at 60F to the Hwy 421 Snake at 18F w snowsaltwet. Awesome tire that turns in very easily with linear transition. Rear steps out very predictably with easy control. Pretty crazy ride but grip was never in question, even under hard braking in the wetsalt. Wont put anything but a Michelin on.
