Information and Details about the Michelin Commander 2 Tires - Rear
made by Michelin
Michelin Commander 2 launches a new motorcycle tire which delivers unrivaled tire life. Independent tests carried out in the United States using a Harley-Davidson® Electra Glide® Classic prove it: a rear MICHELIN Commander II is capable of covering up to 40,000 kilometers*. That’s nearly twice the distance covered by its direct competitors, while the longevity of the front tire is even greater. The MICHELIN Commander II creates a new standard with regard to durability, yet without making any compromises in terms of wet weather grip, maneuverability or stability. This performance balance provides yet another eloquent illustration of Michelin’s research and development philosophy: no performance gain to be achieved on one front to the detriment of another.

In response to the major problem faced by custom motorcycle riders – tire life, notably at the rear, the engineers at the Michelin Technology Center at Ladoux, France, have developed a new rubber compound. The carcass of this new radial tire is associated with Silica Rain Technology (SRT) which integrates silica into the compound of the tire tread, while the MICHELIN Commander II's tread pattern has been designed to prevent all forms of uneven wear.

The exclusive architecture of the MICHELIN Commander II brings both maneuverability and stability. The tire’s more rigid, high-density carcass improves maneuverability, while the aramid fiber crown ply of the rear tire enhances resistance and lightness for impeccable stability, even at high speeds.

Last but not least, the numerous longitudinal grooves of the new tire's tread pattern optimize water dispersal for outstanding wet weather grip.

A new standard in cruiser tire longevity
  • Independent tests* show that the Michelin® Commander® II rear tire lasts almost twice as long its main competitors, the Metzeler ME 880 and the Dunlop D407/408

    Innovative technology
  • Commander II 90-thread ply is 25% more dense than conventional plies
  • Amplified Density Technology: A highly dense, more-rigid tire casing, which helps deliver excellent feedback and handling
  • Aramid tread plies on the rear tire resist centrifugal growth, reduce weight and provide excellent stability
  • All-new rubber compounds for remarkable wet grip, without compromising durability
  • >Square bead wires improve casing rigidity, handling and ease of installation

    A groundbreaking new look
  • Unique tread pattern for head-turning looks
  • Premium sidewall treatment complements cruiser styling

Pros: ease of mounting, easy break in
    Cons: none noticed

I have killed the z rated Metzler that came on the bike at only 4500 miles. I hope the Michelin will last longer. the price was 100 less than in town and fast shipping. 200mm rubber had me concerned but this tire mounted as easily as the old one came off. 2oz of micro beads and balance has not been an issue. Break in was easy 5 miles of dotted line weaving with increasing lean angle at 50 mph had the pegs scraping and I have not had any ill handling or wash out. At 400 miles I dont yet have an idea of tire life but if these Michelins wear decent I will definitly buy a full set when these are gone. Thanks to Competition Accessories

So far so good - Paul T   NY Recommended by Reviewer: Yes
    Pros: Overall performance
    Cons: None so far

Fed up with my second set of Metzler tires which both times gave me only 5,000 miles before I had to replace. I was a little hesitant to buy the Michelins because the stock rear tire, a Metzler 20050, didn't come in the Michelin Commander. But Michelin did make a 20055 tire, the 55 being a little higher than the 50 Metzler. So far I'm very happy with the Michelins. It seems to track better going straight down the road. The ride is very smooth. The grip on leaning into a turn is much better than the Michelin's. It is a better ride than the Metzler's. Now that being said will I get more than 5,000 miles out of these Michelin's That's all I got out of two sets of the stock Metzler's. Time will tell but so far I'm very, very happy with the overall performance of this tire and the slightly higher rear tire height in the 55 vs the stock 50 is not an issue. Actually, the higher height feels better. My ride is a 2010 Triumph Thunderbird 1700 ABS. So far a great tire

    Pros: Smooth, grippy, nice looking
    Cons: None

Sure this tire felt different when I first rode away with it. but in a good way that kept improving. This tire is super grippy, smooth, tracts very well. I believe this will be the tire of choice for my bike now. My last tires were on my bike for over 16,000 miles. Replaced them both with these Michelin Commander 2's I just love the way they feel and handle. Too soon to give a mileage report, but I believe I should get at least 18,000 miles on them I will be very happy2008 HD Ultra ClassicThe service from Competition Accessories was outstanding, fresh tires, quick service, best prices

I have never purchased Michelin tires before, At first they did not feel quite right , but with a few hundred miles on them they are getting better and hold to the road very nicely My corners were a little funny at first, however they are gripping much better I do recommend these tires now, but will have to see if they will get the mileage people claim.

Great so far - Mbike   ME Recommended by Reviewer: Yes
    Pros: Reasonable price, readily available
    Cons: None so far

This tire arrived promptly from Competition Accessories. It was easy to mount on the rear of my StreetGlide by myself with basic tools. The tire keeps its shape and was quickly inflated onto the bead on the first try. It balanced with only 38 of an ounce weight. After 2000 miles it appears to be wearing well. It has handled well, wet or dry. This is my first tire without a center groove so I was a bit apprehensive. So far it is a great tire. I have already purchased another as I am a high mileage rider.

Excellent tire - JD400   NC Recommended by Reviewer: Yes
    Pros: Great handling, good looks
    Cons: None

Replaced a set of worn Metzler 880s on my Yamaha VStar 1100, did the install myself. The Michelins are noticeably lighter in weight than the Metzlers, but are well constructed. Handling is excellent, tires have great grip and inspire confidence. I feel they are more responsive than the Metzlers on the open road, but I have to work harder to balance the bike at slow speeds. Overall, I'm happy and will be more so if these live up to their promised mileage.

    Pros: High mileage, great handling,
    Cons: [None]

Just ordered my second set of Michelin Commander II's. Have tried several brands of tires over the years and average 5000 - 8000 miles on a rear tire. Currently have 18000 miles on Commander II rear tire. Estimate in 4000 miles I will still have 14 of original tread left. Pretty awesome Not even close on the front tire yet. Estimating I will get close to 40000 miles on it. Have driven cross country on interstate and locally on chip and seal, asphalt, concrete, gravel and dirt in all kinds of weather. Tires handle well and shed water very well. Only caveat has been on grooved pavement but I still haven't found a tire that handles that well.

Great Handling Tire - Harley Big Boy   Recommended by Reviewer: Yes
Pros: Excellent handling and traction, great ride, looks good, awesome price,
    Cons: NONE

I installed this awesome tire in May, 2012 just before participating in Rolling Thunder and have already put over 5,000 miles on this tire since May. VERY pleased - will order another complete set when these need replacing.. Looking forward to seeing just how many miles this tire will get and if Michelin's milage claims are true. Have been caught in heavy rain and these tires perform excellent. Highly recommend.

Major difference - Roadstar1700   AR Recommended by Reviewer: Yes
Pros: Awesome traction, reasonable price, Good looks
    Cons: none

I don't have many miles on these tires yet, my roadstar came factory with dunlops. Needless to say I will never run them again. I bought front and back Michelin Commander 2's and what a difference. I will have to change the way I ride because of the inceased traction these tires produce compared to the dunlops. Makes the bike feel glued to the road. I highly recommend them.

    Harley Charlie
Installed these tires on my 2011 Super Glide Custom to replace the stock Michelin Scorcher 31's. Compared to those tires the Commander 2's are better on irregular surfaces such as rain grooves with no pulling or wandering from the front wheel. The tires exhibit neutral handling characteristics same as the 31's did which makes for precise and easy cornering. Traction seems comparable to the stock tires and the load ratings front and rear are the same.I was pleased to get 11,000 miles out of the Scorchers and the Commander 2's should break that mark according to their claims. The rear tire has deeper tread than the Scorchers and the tread and sidewall designs look good and give the bike a sporty, aggressive appearance.Haven't had a chance to try these tires in the rain yet, but have always been pleased with Michelin products. So far I am very happy with the Commander 2's.

    06roadglide
Definitely a big step up from the original commander tires. Ordered these from COMPACC and had them mounted two weeks ago. I have put on nearly a thousand miles going down to Vegas and around the South rim of the Grand Canyon. All I can say is wow. Definitely a solid great handling tire. Priced along the same lines as my factory 402's but in my opinion a much better tire. If the 20, 000 mileage rating is everything Michelin says it is they definitely have a winner.

5 star right now just for the great shipping, excellent customer service and awesome price..These tires have great tread depth, and a really nice looking roll in ,very aggressive tread. I will be revisiting this review when the tires are mounted and get some mileage on them..Looking forward to testing the claim of 25 thousand from a rear tire.. AW1.

Michelin Commander 2 Tire Review - MarkH   UT Recommended by Reviewer: Yes
    Pros: handling & longevity
Cons: no balancing mark - took 2&34 oz to balance

This the second Commander 2 on the rear & first on the front. Both handling and longevity are improved over the oem tire. Replaced the rear Commander 2 at 13000 miles with 2-32nds tread left. Was getting 7000 miles with oem tire. Turn in, traction and overall handling is improved over oem tire. This tire took more weight to balance than the previous Commander 2 rear or the front. A balancing mark would be helpful. The Michelin Commander 2 is a definite improvement over the oem tire.

In the wind - In the wind   DE Recommended by Reviewer: No
    Pros: Great traction
    Cons: Rough ride

Didn't think Michelin made bias tires, but was willing to check this out since I have had Michelin tires for motorcycles and pickup truck several times and am impressed with the ride and mileage longevity they provide. Was very hesitant since they were bias tires, but figured I would give it a go since it had the Michelin brand. Once you go radial, you do not want to go back to bias tires.Like the traction they provide, do not like the ride. Too rough. Rated for 13K miles, so I'm looking forward to seeing if that works out. If so, I would add a half star.Already have 1000 on the tires. Front & Back

Very Happy - Paul T   NY Recommended by Reviewer: Yes
    Pros: Overall performance
    Cons: None so far

Replaced tires on my 2010 Triumph Thunderbird 1700 ABS. This is my second set of replacement tires. The first time I replaced my tires with the stock Metzlers that came with the bike. As with the original tires the 1st replacement only lasted 5,000 miles. Ok the front tire had a little more wear to go than the rear but not that much. Not alot of miles out of the Metzlers. Read the reviews on the Michelin Commander which were mostly all good. I bought the Michelin's for my third replacement set since owning my ride. I only have them for about 1,000 miles, so far so good. The ride seems better, they grip the road better then the Metzler's, and I really feel a better grip when going into a turn. A nice smooth ride on this tire so far. Whats left to be seen is how much mileage I get out of them hopefully much more than the 5,000 the last two sets of Metzler's gave me. So far a great tire

Pros: Great Grip, Great Handling, Great Price and Easy to Mount
    Cons: None so far

I just replaced the stock Dunlops on an '03 XL883R. This bike is essentially an 11 year old brand new bike with only about 700 miles on it. A dealer had put it away for his kid, then the kid didn't want it... Anyway, the Dunlops were brand new looking, but hard and slippery.I spooned on these Michelin Commander 2s and they were easy to mount, balanced with very little weight and look great. I went for a ride and immediately noticed greater grip and front end feel. After my third ride, I pushed the bike a bit more and the tires continue to impress. Very stable, smooth, quiet, and loads of feedback when leaned over. They feel great

Pros: Great handling. Good on wet roads.
    Cons: None I've found.

I first put these on my Vulcan 800A to replace a set of Avon AMs that were worn out. I love the Avons, but they don't last very long. The other reviews and advertised tread life led me to try them out. While they're not quite as sticky as the Avons, they do very well. I am a conservative rider anyway, so that small difference should be a non-issue. When new, they don't seem to want to follow grooves as much either just as advertised. Since they worked out so well on my Vulcan, I also put them on my 89 FLHS. I ordered the same size for front and rear 14090-16s. Now that Glide handles much better. I had to pull the belt guard off to make it work, but haven't had any problems yet.....even riding 2 up.I won't know about the tread life for a while, but so far they're great

I bought a set of the Michelin commander 2 tires to put on my Harley Davidson Fat Bob Screaming Eagle stage 4. I immediately noticed the difference in the handling and feel of these tires over the Dunlop originals. Traction handling and braking were very noticeably improved. My first refueling I noticed a difference in the gas mileage. I checked it again 2 additional times and confirmed my gas mileage had increased 2 miles per gallon. I am very pleased with the Michelin commander 2 tires. There is no doubt in my mind that I will buy the commander 2 tires again and I will recommend to everyone that is looking for an improvement in tire performance and longevity.

    Pros: Nice shape, good traction
Cons: Not the size I wanted

I really like how this tire looks and rides on my Triumph Rocket III Classic. I don't have many miles on it yet but the only issue I have is that I had to go with a lower profile than I needed and it lowered the front of my bike 1 which is quite a lot. Handling didn't suffer - if anything, it should have tightened it up a little. But I lost ground clearance that was already at a premium to begin with. I wish Michelin would make the size I really need, not to mention one for the back as well. I like the stock Metzlers but they wear too quick and are very pricey. The only other option is a set of Avons and they are worthless - I test rode them once in variable drydamp conditions and they were extremely slick and gave poor feedback. I will need a little time on this one to see how the milage and grip hold up. For now it's just as good as the Metzler.

Great grip. Tread life overrated - Just Dave   Recommended by Reviewer: Yes
    Pros: Excellent wet traction
Cons: Tread life not as advertised

Put these tires on a Harley Wide Glide in April. Was incredibly impressed with the grip absolutely no fear of leaning into turns as far as I can without scraping pipes or pegs. Wet traction is also great. If there's a better tire for a V Twin out there, I haven't seen heard about it. That said, I am buying another front tire today. 8,500 miles and it's at the treadwear indicator. Make no mistake - 8,500 miles on a front tire is great for me Dunlops would give me maybe 3,000.The rear is still at about 85 no doubt I'll get 20,000 miles out of it.
