Joe Rocket Speedmaster Back Protector - Michael CA

Pros: Excellent quality design, materials and construction reasonably pricedhigh value.
Cons: Waist strap somewhat restrictive not enough detailed info regarding fit.
Am wearing a leather riding jacket with no upper back protection by choice, feeling that, like lower body protection butt, knees, shins, etc it's more effective to have it built in to stuff you wear right next to your skin ala Bohn armored 'underwear'. I decided to experiment and bought the Speedmaster because it looked like it might be flexible and low profile enough to satisfy me, as well as fit as close as you could get. Fortunately, I was mostly right. It's not quite as low profile as it looked in the vid, but it's still not bad. It barely shows through my jacket. The back armor itself also seems to move really well with me in all directions. The harnesswaist band, however, do present a certain amount of restriction which can irritate - especially when breathing deeply during more stimulating passages on my rides. I'm still experimenting with adjustment and may ultimately be arrive at a happy medium in terms of snugness for security and looseness for comfort. Most of the protectors of this style look like they would require this tweaking process. It's really easy to slip in and out of, though taking it off for coffee or lunch breaks during long rides and storing it somewhere can be a problem. I do lots of really long day rides - day sporttouring - so this might not bother whose style involves shorter more concentrated ventures. It also does not seem to affect my temperature comfort to any degree, though so far I haven't been out here in central coastal CA on a really hot day. I do think it will prove very breathable based on what I've experienced so far.I would recommend this to someone looking for a much larger degree of protection than armor built in to a jacket which can move around, both in the armor pocket and also the jacket itself on your body, but is not looking for the ultimate which they might want for track-days or really constant aggressive edgy riding. This protector represents a pretty decent value as does much of the Rocket line of gear and is definitely a step up from jacket pocket armor protection. My only quibble is noted above in 'Cons'. I bought an M, but it falls somewhat short of protecting the area just below the nape of my neck several inches of exposed spine and I might have been better off ordering an L. Since I do have some lower back protection in my riding shorts and jacket I'm presently just wearing the Speedmaster higher by a couple inches. I'm 5' 9 12 tall, slenderrangy build, broad shoulders, 40-41 chest and weight 152lbs. or -, just for reference.
