Video Reviews
Hey guys this is Reuben with Competition Accessories. I'm here to talk to you today about HJC's new Symax 3 modular helmet. Now the Symax 3 is the replacement for the Symax 2 . We have one of those up here. Now This is one of HJC's Premium modular helmets. The reason that it was set apart from their other modular helmets is because it uses a fiberglass shell , and that's not changing in the Symax 3. It uses an advanced fiberglass spectra deposit weaved shell thorough the helmet , the chin bar is poly carbonate to keep the weight down. The rest of the helmet is going to be that fiberglass shell. The fiberglass is able to be made to be thinner a little bit lighter and is definitely going to be stiffer then the poly carbonate variety of modular helmets from HJC. Real quick were going to take a look at the differences between the Symax 2 and the Symax 3. A couple main differences , biggest thing that i noticed right off the bat is the amount of ventilation you get. The old Symax2 you had a chin bar vent. Same thing here except its going to open a little bit differently , its going to direct air up onto the face shield. But where you really start to see a difference is the upper portion you see the air vents you see on the Symax2 has just two small holes in the front that's going to bring air inside the helmet. With the Symax 3 your actually getting two ram air scoops. They are still closeable with a slider switch , but its just going to draw a lot more air into the helmet. You spin it around and look at the back of the helmets you'll see that there's even more upgrades here. You actually have a built in rear wing on the Symax 3 vs. the Symax 2 where you just have that round basic shape . Symax 2 just has these two exhaust vents at the back of the helmet here and that was it. The Symax 3 your actually going to have exhaust vents coming out from underneath this spoiler here and then have a couple stacked vents at the base of the helmet as well, to allow that warm air to escape. Getting hot air out of a helmet is the best way to cool a helmet .As air passes over a helmet its going to create an area of low pressure and its going to draw warm air right out side, right out of the helmet. Now another thing they've improved (and well show you how this works in just a second) there's an internal sun-shield visor and its definitely one of the popular features about this helmet. With the Symax 2 it was the same type of system you basically slide it forward and that deploys the face shield, But when you release the face shield its just a real fast spring loaded motion. What they've done with the Symax 3 is actually dampened it. So its the same type of mechanism so when you release it , its dampened so its not a jarring loud sound. Some other differences if you look at the side here the profile , they've really cleaned up the area where the chin bar attaches to the helmet itself . If you take a look at it from the top down then you can actually see that its alot cleaner, so its probably going to be a lot quieter. Its probably going to flow threw the air alot better. So let me move the Symax 2 out of the way here, and lets start looking at the insides. One thing you might notice here is there are actually pin-lock posts built onto the shield here . This comes pin-lock ready so you can install a pin-lock insert .The pin lock basically goes into the inside of the shield and it creates a duel pane effect, it basically eliminates any fog. This is a very good system. This is the HJ17 shield so it is the same shield that is used on alot of other HJC helmets which means you have a huge selection of different tints and mirror shields to go on the Symax 3. Like we mentioned earlier there is an internal sun-visor. So if you slide that forward you actually have that internal visor. So adjustments on the fly very very convenient . If you happen to run under a tunnel or under some tree cover you can always quickly release it and raise it up out of the way. The chin bar itself is just a simple single button mechanism basically you pull forward on this piece here and that's going to release the chin bar.Its going to open up very nicely and smoothly. The mechanism is very nice , a strong detente up at the top so its going to be held up for you. If you take a look here you can actually see the metal to metal latch that is used to secure the chin bar. When you close this you get a good secure lock with closure. Now take a quick good look inside this helmet. The Symax3 uses a silver cool liner which is HJC's moisture lining,Its going to manage moisture really well. Your going to see the cheek pads come out really easily. This material is very soft and comfortable on the skin , its going to draw moisture on the face and keep you comfortable. You'll see that they leave the areas around your ear very thin, and the reason for that is that you can install speakers. You'll see that there's a small recess built into the helmet there for a speaker so you can easily install that . Another thing that i didn't mention is and this is another huge upgrade from the Symax 2 is they actually make this helmet Bluetooth ready. So the chatterbox xb2ih will clip right in here, basically if you pop that little panel off you'll have a little area that will just click in . The chatter box its going to integrate perfectly with this helmet, your not going to have to mount it up with a clamp or anything everything will click right into that spot. Everything has a built in channel for wiring for the speakers so its going to be a very clean instillation and it integrates with the helmet nicely. Were going to get the rest of the lining out here. For the crown liner its basically just two snaps at the back and a few little snaps at the front of the crown and that's going to come out. You'll see that they build it with alot of mesh material and other openings for that ventilation to actually get threw to your head so it keeps you very comfortable. If you look here on the inside you'll see how well they did with the air channels. You actually have lots of air passages for that air to circulate throughout the helmet , so you get cool air in that cools your head and warm air gets drawn out the back. So they have really really revamped the ventilation system on this helmets and i think its going to be definitely a very well received by the modular helmet crowd. So that is the Symax 3 from HJC.

Symax 3 - Frank--Westport Ma   MA Recommended by Reviewer: Yes
Pros: Good looks- improved air flow- reasonable price.
Cons: Helmet strap to far back.

Bought this helmet to replace the BT Max. Great looks and the fit was right on. Didn't find the noise leval bad but I ride a Street Glide so no helmet is going to be quiet. The helmet does breath alot better and you will feel a lot cooler. The shield stays fog free and you can't beat the internal visor. Its not a 600 helmet but its a good bang for your bucks. Looked around for a good price and found that nobody could touch Competition Accessories and top that off with free shipping its a win win situation. Will definately be a return customer and recommend to friends.

HJC Symax 3 - Triumph Triple   PA Recommended by Reviewer: Yes
Pros: Field of view. Chin gaurd latch. Face shield hardware.
    Cons: Inner tinted shield actuator.

The following comparisons are against the Symax 1. Head fitment has remained consistent even with additional suspension improvement. Field of view has improved with design change. Chin latch and face shield hardware have improved as they latch without being forced. The inner tinted shield actuator is somewhat annoying as the spring loaded mechanism doesn't always latch. You must depress the release button while pushing forward to achieve the lowest setting. This is still an excellent helmet for the money.

Great helmet - Bob - Hagerstown   MD Recommended by Reviewer: Yes
Pros: Great helmet. Great fit, features. Tinted visor is great Great ventilation.
    Cons: none

Great helmet. Great fit, features are super. Went with matte black - beautiful. The slide down tinted visor is great, easy to operate while riding. I went to a local shop to try on similar styled helmets for sizing, settled on an XXL, which was smart, as I wouild have ordered an XL which woudl have been too small. Great valueIntent is to add a bluetooth com system soon - which was a factor in selecting this helmet. Great pricing - I shopped around the Net & local shops - no price was better.

Great Helmet - mdw8394   IL Recommended by Reviewer: Yes
Pros: Fit and Finish, Internal Visor, Quiet
    Cons: Ventilation

Great helmet. Love the internal visor. The noise is very good for a modular helmet.

Good helmet for price - William   SC Recommended by Reviewer: Yes
Pros: good fit, fit glasses nicely
    Cons: [None]

It fits snug and tight with no movement but doesn't squeeze on my temples and ears as my previous non-modular full face HJC did. The flip-up component works well and latches in the down position easily and firmly. It seems light for a modular and well balanced. It's quiet for a modular. I can't report on the ventilation since I haven't worn it on a hot day yet. The only problem I'm having is fully closing the visor with one hand. It seems to leave a small sliver of opening at the bottom. A little dab of Vaseline at the hinge will probably fix it. Darker inner sun shield and the ability to set it at different heights would be nice, but overall it is excellent.

Good Helmet for the money - RonRider   SC Recommended by Reviewer: Yes
Pros: Confortable, Inner Shield, Bluetooth, Modular Flip-up design
    Cons: [None]

Overall a great helmet. Much better than the symax 2 it is replacing.

Good helmet for the money - Steve B   OR Recommended by Reviewer: Yes
    Pros: Comfortable Helmet
Cons: Drop down sun visor doesn't work with glasses

I had a previous version of the Symax that I thought was a good helmet. I've always felt that HJC provides the best compromise between comfort and cost. The new Symax 3 is a little better. Not alot better, but better enough that I think it was worth it to upgrade. My Cardo headset installed fine, no problems. Other reviewers have said that they can lower the sun shield while wearing glasses, but I have found that not to be the case with me. Every time I try and lower the sunshield it hits my glasses. I don't even bother with it any more. I bought 2 if these, one for my wife and one for me. The sizing does run a little smaller that my old Symax. My wife wore a medium with her old Symax but a large with the Symax 3 and I wore a large but a x-large with the Symax 3. Overall a very good helmet that you can't go wrong in purchasing.

Best Symax Yet - Will   FL Recommended by Reviewer: Yes
Pros: Improved ventilation, truer sizing, good headset compatibility
Cons: Still noisy, leaky face shield seal

If you had a Symax 1or 2 and had to wear a size or two larger than specified in the sizing chart to accommodate comm system earphones, you will like the new version. It has much improved ear pockets and fits truer to size. Airflow is superior to earlier versions too. But be sure you know where the small top vent closure is and how to operate it, as it flows a lot of water very quickly in the rain Readily accepts clamp-on style headsets such as Harley and J&M, as well as integrated wired or Bluetooth type systems. I hoped it would be quieter than the Symax 2, but it is noisier with the shield open and about the same closed. Good all-around street helmet, but the shield seal design has not improved and it still leaks in steady or heavy rain.

Nice helmet for the money if it fits your head shape - Cincy Rider   OH Recommended by Reviewer: Yes
    Pros: Lightweight, high quality finish
Cons: Not so quiet, seems to fit an oval shaped head

My review would rate this helmet higher if it fit my head shape better. I had an older HJC helmet in size XL in this model I had to go to a 2XL and it is still a tight fit. When I engage the sun shield it pushes my glass down my nose. I also do not understand how people say you can put this modular helmet on without removing your glasses, I cannot. The helmet is disappointing in the amount of wind noise with both the visor open and closed. Fogging is also an issue I did not use the pinlock shield.

HJC Symax 3 Helmet - Divscotty   ID Recommended by Reviewer: Yes
Pros: Sizing is correct for size small. Easy to use latch on chin bar closure.
Cons: The Sun-shield distorts and I expected more air movement with the vent open.

The Sun-shield distorts a whole lot it is difficult to see clearly and the farther it is extended down the more distorted it becomes. The sun shield pops down and up very easy it simply needs to be made from a material you can see through clearly. I expected more ventilation, possibly it is less because i ride behind a windshield. The helmet looks nice. It needs a tab on the D-rings for ease of chi n strap removal. I put some speakers in and their was plenty of room for them without cramping my ears. The helmet is not too heavy.
