Hey whats up guys this is Reuben with Competition Accessories and welcome to our video review of the Gmax GM78 and the GM78s which is the same helmet but with more accessories for you snow guys. Looking at the one here in front of me this is called the fire-strike graphic and we have the GM78 available in multiple different graphics and colors, you can jump on our website to check those out. Bang for the buck you get a lot of features compared to some other brand of helmets in the same price range. The street version of this helmet is under a 150 bucks. You can jump on there and check out all our current prices for this helmet. The snow version which comes with a little bit more accessories is a little more expensive. First things first ventilation on this helmet, you get a ton of vents, most of them are closeable. You have a chin vent here you can open and close with a simple slider. Thats going to direct air up and onto the face shield to keep your vision clear and give you some good air flow. You have intake vents at the top here again you can open and close these. On the back of the helmet you have some exhaust vents that are also closeable. A lot of other helmets out there are made to leave their rear vents open all the time, so thats nice you can close the four vents up if you want to. On the bottom of the helmet you do have some static ports and these are always open. Now one thing that is really unique to Gmax is they incorporate this rear light. You have three modes you can cycle between. The first mode is always on, the second mode is going to be a slow blink, and the option is a rapid blink. That is really going to help keep you visible especially at night you dont want to get rear ended or for people not to see you, you can leave that flashing and people are definitely see you coming. You can also link this up with your brakes and they have a wifi kit that links it wireless to your brakes/brake switch on your bike. This will actually light up when you hit the brakes and obviously with a helmet that is a high place to have a light shine and hopefully it will get drivers to notice you. Now the shell of the GM78 is a light weight polycarbonate shell, in fact if I throw it on the scale here I say light weight compare to other polycarbonate shells with the internal drop down sun visor, but it is still 3.95 lbs. For a helmet under 200 dollars its definitely a great value. You have a UV protected shield here, it is easy to open and close. You also have an internal drop down sun visor. There is a slider at the top here you can slide back and forth to deploy or retract the sun visor. Nice convenient location easy to operate especially with gloves on. Be careful, you dont want to be too rough with this because it is a thin plastic that pushes the shield to pull up or down, but it drops the shield down nice and low and you can see its actually down far enough so its not in your line of sight, a lot of times they don't drop down far enough and that can kind of be in your vision. This comes down far enough that its not in your way and it is not hitting your nose either. Also it is far enough forward so if you wear glasses you will still be able to have them on while the visor is deployed. Now you have a rubber breathe deflector here as well. That is going to help keep your breathe off the faceshield again helping it not to fog. The internal visor that is drop down is also coated with an anti-fog coating. You can remove the interior on the Gmax helmets. There are a few snaps on the cheek pads and speaker pockets if you are going to run a communication system. You can remove the interior real quick and easy. If you ever need to swap out cheek pads or something like just cleaning the helmet up you can easily pull the internal pads out and clean it up. You can see the crown liner has quite a bit of mesh material on it as well, thats going to allow all that venting built in the helmet to actually reach your skin and keep you comfortable. Looking at the interior here you can see that the EPS liner which is that white foam throughout the helmet here. That is what is going to absorb impact in a crash so if you go down the poly carbonate shell is going to spread the impact over the broadest area of the shell/helmet. The internal liner is going to takeover and crush or absorb the impact so your head doesn't have too. Also it has all the ventilation holes so when you are riding that air has somewhere to go inside the helmet and throughout the helmet out the back. You can see they have a little bit of foam in here as well so your head is not hitting up against that, and the rest of the foam is built in the crown liner to keep you comfortable. I wanted to quickly show you the snow version helmet that we have here. For you guys riding snowmobiles or riding in really cold conditions wear fog on the face shield is an issue the snow version actually comes with an electric heated shield. It comes with the power leads you will need to hook up to your sleds battery. You have your port here on the side and you can see it is a dual pane shield. This insulates from the inside to the outside so your not having fogging issues. He external shield here is anti scratch coated so your going to get a lot of useful life out of this shield. Another thing you will notice is there is this really large breathe deflector built in on this helmet. You can remove this easily and then it has a nice comfortable foam padding that will sit right on your nose so its not uncomfortable. That is really going to do a good job keeping your nose and breathe away from the shield, along with keeping you warm and preventing more fogging issues. On the bottom you have a removable chin curtain and that will seal up the base of the helmet a little bit better so your not getting cold air coming up in the helmet. This helmet also has the drop down internal visor. Check the GM78 and the GM78 snow version on our website at Competition Accessories is an unbelievable value for what you get. The snow version also does have the brake light. Dont forget you can earn up to 5% comp a cash back on future purchases. Helmet Shield - GJ Chuck   CO Recommended by Reviewer: Yes
Pros: Great sun protection. It is just dark enough without causing any sight interfrence or distortion.
    Cons: None

I replaced the clear shield on my GM54 with this silver shield and am much impressed with the fact that it helps on blocking the sun and also still allows for great vision to the front and sides. I highly recommend this for improved daytime riding.

Gmax tinted shields. - GMAX shields.   NY Recommended by Reviewer: Yes
Pros: Easily switched out, no waves or blurr in plastic
    Cons: NONE

Bought a blue iridium and a smoked, I have only used the blue so far this year. I just love this shield blue. Even though I bought the GMAX 54 modular helmet with the drop down internal sun shield I still like the look of a smoked or colored external visor. Priced right and excellent customer service. What a great company

Great Idea to Add a Brake Light - Matt B   Recommended by Reviewer: Yes
Pros: Great Idea, Better Visibility, Works Great
    Cons: [None]

This is a great idea I feel safer knowing that I can be seen better at night and during the day. Only wish the light was brighter so it could be seen better during the day. Also wish just the light was sold separately. I have 2 GMax helmets and wanted both to have the light synced to the brakes but I didn't need a second brake light kit because you can sync 2 helmet lights to one brake light kit.

Great Feature - Roger   Recommended by Reviewer: Yes
Pros: Easy to install, low price
    Cons: [None]

This was a great upgrade to the basic light unit in my GM54 helmet....very easy install, just make sure you know what each of the 3 lines coming off your brake llight are ...tiny splice, attach the included wire crimps, I zip-tied it to a bracket under the seat of my 650r, entire install about 15 minute's. And it works.....Install the light unit into your helmet and now you are ready to ride, safetly at night People are impressed and it does catch that stray drivers eye As always FANTASTIC prices , fast shipping. Great addition for an already great idea

A necessary accessory - Thomas   TX Recommended by Reviewer: Yes
    Pros: Easy switch
    Cons: [None]

I was thinking the slide shield in the GM54 would be just the ticket. It does work great, but in the heat of summer here two shields radiating sunlight isn't a real good idea. This smoke shield switches out with the clear one very quickly and is just the ticket for hot sunny days.

Good Value - xflyer53   CT Recommended by Reviewer: Yes
Pros: Good ventilation, Snap on lense
    Cons: Sizing runs slightly large

Overall a good value helmet. Stays pretty dry in the rain despite all the venting. The use of a tinted outer visor and the inner flip tinted visor the strongest of sunsets are no match. The inner tinted visor works great on any sunny day and covers over glasses very well. This helmet runs slightly larger than other GMAX helmets. The cheek pads feel a bit large. This isn't a very noisy helmet and vents air very well.

High feature low cost helmet - Mike in AZ   AZ Recommended by Reviewer: Yes
Pros: venting, sun visor, rear light, style, noise reduction
Cons: sun visor not dark enough, no air conditioning

I previously owned a GMAX GM68S. It was a nice comfortable helmet with decent venting and had the rear light for night time visiblity. It was noisy enough that I wore ear plugs, but not deafening like my Fly Trekker. It had a bit more room around the temples to better allow for sun glasses, unlike the Trekker which was snapping the arms off sun glasses left and right. I still went through a fair amount of glasses with the GM68S, but not nearly as many as with the Trekker. But still having sweaty steamy foam lined sunglasses against my face was no fun. I purchased the 68S as a close-out and the only one they had in my size was black. Not my first choice as it's not the best for visibility and it just absorbed the Phoenix sun. But for the close-out price I couldn't complain. I recently stumbled while carrying it, and it hit the pavement HARD, bouncing several times, breaking off a vent, cracking the top vent housing, marring the face shield and rendering it pretty much useless. Now I told you all this so I could compare it to my new GM78.I was able to find the 78 in white YAY. That helps with visibility, and doesn't seem to get AS hot as the black helmet, but Phoenix riding is hot regardless. The venting seems to be pretty good so far. At hiway speeds it seems to stay a bit cooler than the 68S. Some one please invent a helmet with AC I ride with the main shield open at speeds up to about 35mph. Faster than that, wind come around the sun visor and bothers my eyes. The sun visor is a really nice feature. It saves money on constanly replacing broken sunglasses, keeps sweaty steamy glasses off my face, and alliviates the hassle of putting them on & off as lighting conditions change. I just wish there was a slightly darker sun visor. It's not quite as dark as my sun glasses, and I'm contemplating getting a smoked main shield to compensate for the blindingly bright Phoenix sun. Although I don't really want to carry a second shield, changing them out on the 78 is really simple and an improvement over the 68S. The 78 has the rear light for night time visibility. I don't care who this is gimmicky with both th 68S and the 78, I've had drivers at stop lights tell me they thought it was cool and it really got their attention, I always set it to fast blink so apparently it's working and helping keep me alive. The 78 is MUCH quieter than my old 68S. Even at hiway speeds, I'm a bit on the fence as to wether or not I still need earplugs. I do still wear them on the hiway, but this helmet is pretty quiet without them.Bottom line This is a good helmet with many nice features at an affordable price. If you live out west, allow time for it to arrive. Unlike Brian in MD, mine took quite a while to arrive. He's a lot closer to them than I am though. Comp Acc does have the best price I could find though, so I take it in stride.

A bit darker than expected - Jerry   UT Recommended by Reviewer: Yes
Pros: good addition to the helmet
Cons: it's as dark as my sunglasses

While I didn't expect it to be as dark as it is, it does do a good job of blocking the glare on those overly bright days. I bought the blue iridium anticipating a slight tint, but these are as dark athe drop down shadevisor built into the GMAX GM54. It was easy to attach and change from the original clear shield and visibility is not distorted in any noticeable way. I would recommend it, but just beware that the pictures don't depict just how dark it is and in some jurisdictions it may be illegal to wear after sunset.

Price Doesn't Match Quality - Jason in SD   Recommended by Reviewer: Yes
Pros: stylish, venting, visibility, adequate noise management, rear light, value
Cons: Sizing is tight, not sold on the mesh chin curtain

I searched high and low for a new helmet under 200. First criteria was a white helmet for visibility purposes and my Triumph T-Bird is white as well. Second, I wanted major noise reduction improvement vs my open faced Fulmer which was not hard to do and so far the GM78 has exceeded my expectations. Outside of those 2 things, the visibility is great can't say that for all full faced helmets, the venting is nice, the rear light is good to have for riding at night, and the sun shade is nice too but I'm not sure how much I'll use it since I were good riding glasses. The jury is still out on the mesh chin curtain but time will tell. The only real con is the sizing, most brands I fit in to a L or XL, and the Gmax sizing charts says XL for me. No way. I had to step up to a XXL for comfort. I certainly recommend this helmet for all it offers but make sure you buy 1 size larger.

Nice helmet but fit was odd - Brian in MD   Recommended by Reviewer: Yes
Pros: Good overall quality, excellent internal sun visor, value
Cons: peculiar fit front to back

I needed to replace my 3yr old HJC IS-16, which had served me well but was starting to show some wear. I had bought my wife a GMAX68S last year for the occasional rides on the back, and was so impressed with that model that I decided to go for a GMAX for myself this time. I was excited to see this new GM78 model with the internal visor - one of the features I loved about my HJC. So I ordered one in solid white Compacc had the lowest price of any online dealer, btw and it arrived quickly. I ordered the small, which is the same size I wear in other helmets I also have a Sparx and as soon as I tried it on I knew something was not right. The helmet fit well side to side and at the cheeks, but the padding in front was pressing so hard into my forehead that it was downright painful. I wore it for about 15 minutes hoping it would resolve but no dice. Interestingly, my wife's GM68S is an XS, and although tight it actually fit me without any discomfort. My personal fit issues notwithstanding, this is a high quality helmet - especially at under 120. It looks to have great venting, the main visor is outstanding, and the internal sun visor is just as nice as my HJC - it comes down low enough so that you don't see the bottom edge - an issue I've read about in other helmets with internal visors. It felt about average weight to me. Since I didn't ride with it, I can't comment on noise control. Lastly, the GMAX 78 continues with the built-in LED on the back of the helmet, same as the 68S. I find this to be a nifty feature for added rider visibilty, even it it is considered by some to be a bit gimmicky. Overall, if the fit works for you, it's a great helmet - and recommended.

Nifty device for the price - Steve   AR Recommended by Reviewer: Yes
    Pros: Inexpensive
Cons: Not bright enough, installation may have you going to church to ask forgiveness

I have a love-hate relationship with this piece. First, don't bother reading the instructions. You'll have just as much success looking at the factory installed light and seeing how to remove it and install the identical looking replacement. It's straight forward enough. The problem is the two tiny screws that hold it in the helmet. You will need a jewelers screwdriver phillips. The screws are recessed with access thru very small openings. They come out easily enough, although getting them all the way out of the opening can be tough. That is your first clue that re-installing them will be a challenge. Getting the two screws thru the opening is not difficult. But then, they fall into a cavernous space that allows them to twist and turn in every direction but into the threaded holes. It will try your patience. One of mine went in on the second attempt. The other one fought me every step of the way. Stop. Have a cold drink. You'll feel like you need a beer, but alcohol won't help your dexterity. Then try again. It will eventually fall into the hole and you'll wonder why it didn't happen 45 minutes ago. Now, to the installation of the sending module. Where are the instructions Oh, there aren't any. Just enough to tell you which wire is ground and which one goes to the brake light wire. Now you're on your own. The unit is small and can mount almost anywhere on a big touring bike. That might not be the case on a sport bike. You need a small place within a few inches of a brake light wiring harness. Obviously, they don't know what kind of bike you are putting this on. So, they can't tell you where the harness is, what color of wire to look for, or anything else. You either need a wiring diagram of your bike, or a voltmeter and the knowledge to use it. Once you find the brake light wire and ground, splice into those wires with the included taps. Now where is the double sided tape or Velcro to secure the module. Once again, Oh, that's not included. You've got to be kidding me. A one inch square pice of double sided tape is not included OK, never mind, I'm sure I have some laying around here somewhere. Now it's installed. Let's try it. Hey, look at that. It really works. Just like the stock light, it only has two little LED's. Easily seen at night. In the daytime, not so much. But, it was less that 30 bucks, so it's probably with it.

Pros: Like the concept and the added visiblity they would add

Followed instructions and tried the brakes and guess what no light on helmet, installation instructions really weak and provide no guide to help. I hat a lot of detail but no trouble shooting provided at all.
