Video Reviews
Hey guys this is Reuben with Competition Accessories and welcome to our video review of the all new Dunlop Sportmax Q3 tires which is an awesome new tire from Dunlop. There is a lot of buzz about this tire because they have done some really interesting things with the construction of it. Up here on the scale we have the old Q2 which was really an awesome tire to begin with. A lot of people of surprised that Dunlop so quickly came out with the Q3. What they have done is some really cool things with the construction of the Q3 that we will talk about in a little bit. One thing I want to note about the Q3 is they are using carbon fiber in the side walls of the tire. What that does is it provides a more stiff carcass on the side walls and up on the edges of the tire so that when you are really cranked over in a turn on the gas or on the brakes hard or really pushing through a turn hard then this tire is not going to deform as easily because the structure of the tire is going to be able to hold up a little more abuse. Where as a softer carcass is going to diffuse or deform a little bit more and that is going to give you a more vague feeling in the corners. This tire has better cornering stability and but it still retains that nice rubber compound on the outer portion of the tire that the Q2 is famous for. Consider it a 50/50 tire so it is 50% on the street and 50% on the track. Keep in mind that this is a Hyper-sport tire that is designed for grip not tread life. Don't get these and expect them to last thousands and thousands of miles because you are going to wear them out quickly. The reason I have the Q2 up on the scale, I will apologize up front I wish I had the exact same size in the Q2 all we have left currently is 170 rears and in the Q3 I have a 180 in the rear. That's actually more impressive though because I have the 170 in the Q2 which is 10 mm more narrow or its a smaller tire than the 180 in the Q3. I want you to take a look at the scale here, I actually have it zeroed out for the stand that's on here so we are only getting the weight of the actual tire itself. SO the Q2 in the 170 comes in at 14.45 so almost 14.50 pounds for the Q2. I will go ahead and throw the Q3 up on the scale and it weighs in at 13.55 even though it is a bigger tire it is almost a pound lighter than the Q2. Remember that is rotational mass you might not think that is a huge number but that is unsprung wait so your suspension is soaking up bumps and things like that and the weight that is below the suspension is a key factor in how well that suspension can react to bumps in the road and quick changes to your bikes handling. Rotational mass, remember as you accelerate or brake this thing has to speed up or slow down with your wheel same thing for the front tire so shaving off some weight there is actually a huge way to gain performance in both acceleration and braking and also turning because the gyroscopic effect when you are turning in you are kind of fighting that and having less mass on the outside edges of your wheels and tires is a huge way to gain some performance. They have shaved off some weight on these tires which is another way to really significantly improve the advantages you have both on the street and the track, I havent had a chance to ride on these yet but I have very high hopes on how they will perform. Now lets talk about some other things, obviously the carbon fiber is cool and we can all geek out about that but some of the other kind of everyday factors that we need to look at. Number one they have retained their intuitive response profile, so that's the profile of the tire or how the tire falls off to the side and the Q2's and the Q3's should also be a very linear tire it doesn't fall off super aggressively or super suddenly but its also not a heavy feeling tire what it does for you when you turn it in if you have to make any line adjustments you know when your in a corner you have to widen up because you see some gravel or you know maybe you are passing someone at the track and you need to make some adjustments or maybe your line choice wasnt perfect when you turned in and you need to tighten up or widen up when your in a corner this allows you to move the bike around while it is leaned over without it feeling like your on a razor edge you know. It gives you a real nice contact patch and the contact actually increases quite a bit as you lean over further which increases the amount of grip that you have. Another thing to really look at with the design of the Q3 is the lan-c ratio and what that refers to is the ratio of grooves rain grooves versus solid rubber that you have. If you look at the Q2's you can see that you have lots of little rain grooves throughout the sides and down the center of tire and it still did very well wet weather performance was decent on these as well. What they have done with the Q3 is they have extended the length of these center longitudinal rain grooves so they are kind of longer and go a little bit further and that is going to help evacuate more water when you are riding in the rain obviously when you are riding in the rain you typically don't crank it as far over as you would in dry weather so they are not concerned as much as the sides of the shoulders here. You still do retain some rain grooves on the side but if you compare the teo you will see that there is way more rubber hitting the ground on the side of the Q3's. Again for dry performance I think you going to have a lot of grip with these tires. They have said that the wet weather performance has improved as well. They hit a home run there with the tread design and the performance in dry and wet weather conditions. Another thing they have brought over from the Q2 on the rear only is their multi-tread compound. All that means is it is a dual compound tire where you have a little bit more firmer rubber in the center of the tire and then the shoulders they move over to a softer rubber. Quickly we will talk about the front that we have up here, pretty similar profile to the Q2 with the intuitive response profile. Rain grooves down the center that you can see there and this is just a single compound to give you a lot of grip in the corners. Very cool tire technology that dunlop has incorporated in their tires and remember these are made and manufactured in the USA. That is another cool selling point as well. Information and Details about the Dunlop Sportmax Q3 Motorcycle Tires - Z-Rated - Rear
made by Dunlop

Dunlop proudly introduces the new Sportmax® Q3, the next-generation successor to the highly praised Sportmax® Q2®. The Sportmax Q3 delivers next-generation sportbike tire performance by incorporating Dunlop’s new Carbon Fiber Technology (CFT), and it also represents an outstanding value, which makes it a winner twice over.

“Our Sportmax Q2 tire just recently took on all of the other tire brands in the category in the Sport Rider Magazine shootout and the Sportmax Q2 won hands down,” said Mike Manning, General Manager, Marketing.

“And here we are introducing the Sportmax Q3—an even better tire than the Q2—that will set new standards in the high-performance sport tire Dunlop’s new Carbon Fiber Technology (CFT) incorporates a carbon fiber reinforcement element in the Sportmax Q3 tire sidewalls. The many attributes of carbon fiber—high tensile strength, low weight, high chemical resistance, high temperature tolerance and low thermal expansion—make it a great match for application in the Sportmax Q3.

In addition, the success Dunlop has earned with the Sportmax® D211™ GP-A in AMA Pro Road Racing has led directly to many of the performance advantages in the Sportmax Q3.
  • There’s the new tread pattern on the Q3, a planned outgrowth of the GP-A tread pattern
  • Features fewer grooves that are longer in length to help route water away more effectively in wet conditions
  • Dunlop’s Intuitive Response Profile™ (IRP) design for phenomenal steering and handling characteristics
  • MT Multi-Tread™ technology with a tough, cool-running long-wearing compound in the center of the tread
  • Lateral-grip compounds on the sides
  • Dunlop engineers worked to optimize tire carcass construction and tire compounds in the front and rear Sportmax Q3 tires.
  • Exhibits exceptional cornering stability especially at high lean angles,
  • Responsive and precise steering characteristics
  • Predictable and smooth transitional-steering performance for more confidence-inspiring handling

Amazing - Benelli Tornado RS   Recommended by Reviewer: Yes
Pros: Never ending grip, neutral steering, much lighter than q2, confidence inspiring, very stable
    Cons: None so far

Just put these on. WOW I'm hitting curves faster than I ever have by a LOT. I went from decent to really fast. Extreme lean angles are a breeze. Super confident with these. Best tire I ever had and have been riding for 20 years. Will be hard to improve this tire. I can't imagine what the q4 will be like. Can't comment on longevity or wet riding yet.

Incredible Tire - tinytiger   CA Recommended by Reviewer: Yes
Pros: The tire is ready to go in any weather. No need to wait for it to warm up.
Cons: Tread life could be a little longer.

The Q2 was a great tire. The Q3 is even better. You can jump on and ride without having to worry if you will have any grip while the tire warms up. It is extremely confidence inspiring when you dive into turns and corners. There is a lot of feedback from the tire so you know how hard you can push it. I gained 5 to 10 mph in corners with these tires.I ride in Southern California and average about 80 mph when traffic isn't bad. Even when you get down to the threads, you still have a lot of confidence the tire will keep you going in the right direction. My only wish is that the tread life was a little better but a heavy throttle hand at times is partly to blame.

Jerry - Jerry   CA Recommended by Reviewer: Yes
Pros: It is a great ride
Cons: Takes a while to break the tires in

I had the q2 tires an they were the best tires I ever had. I hope the q3s are better.

Q3 - Tikiotool   CA Recommended by Reviewer: Yes
Pros: Good and consistent grip, good price
    Cons: None

Mounted these to my '13 RSV4 and headed out to Buttonwillow Raceway for a track day. These tires performed very well and offered consistent and reliable grip. Even with ambient temps of 105F and track temps seeing over 135F, these tires performed great and with the right pressures looked very good and uniform after the day was over. These also perform well on the street and offer good grip

Buy IT - Another incredible tire from Dunlop   CA Recommended by Reviewer: Yes
Pros: Great traction and feedback from the tire.
    Cons: Still thinking....

I had the Sportsmax Q2's on my bike and they lasted about 7500 miles. It was the best tire I had put on my bike up to that point. When they started showing threads, I got the Sportsmax Q3. Wow Dunlop still kept that incredible feel of the tire while making the sidewall stiffer. They don't need any warm up like a lot of tires before they start to grip. These are ready to go when you sit your bike. The stiffer sidewall really gives you more confidence to hit the corners and still get a ton of feedback from the bike so you can keep pushing it or back off a bit.I've only had the tires on for a few weeks but love having these on my bike. The only negative I can think of is when the tires were first put on, the initial rubber to burn off was very sticky. It increased the rolling friction and I was a little worried that I would lose speed or tread life on the tires. Everything is awesome after that little bit was worn off.

Honestly, not that much better than the Q2, but... - MrCrashHappy   VA Recommended by Reviewer: Yes
Pros: Grip, stability, warm-up time, wet grip, predictability, you name it.
Cons: I never let convicted felons anywhere near my ride.

I reviewed the Q2s. This tire is at least as good. My buds that race at Summit Point were rabid Q2 fans and they've switched to Q3s. I am a street hooligan and spend most of my high-speed fun on crappy two-lanes with no shoulder, so I need to have confidence in my tires. Pulled off another brand with at least 1K of tread left because it sucked compared to the Dunlops. Got my first Q3 and I couldn't be happier. Back to worry-free insanity. Even when they slip, there isn't any drama. All situations are within your reaction time to control. That's the way it should be. Hoop up, get crazy. You won't be disappointed.
