Hey this is Reuben with Competition Accessories welcome to our review of the Michelin Pilot Power 3 tires. This is a brand new tire from Michelin in January 2013 and we are just getting our first look at these. If you are familiar with the Michelin line-up then you probably noticed that the Michelin Pilot Power Pure is no longer available and it has been replaced with the Pilot Power 3's. There are some new terms and technologies that go into the production of the Pilot Power 3's. Now a lot of this is going to be comparing it to the Michelin Pilot Power 2CT which is going to be one of the most popular sport bike tires that Michelin has produced or any manufacturer has made. What the 2CT's brought to the table is the dual compound technology, they have different compounds of rubber on the tire it selves. These take it to a whole another level, now the front is going to be still very similar in that It has a firmer rubber in the center and a softer rubber on the shoulders. What that allows them to do is give you a tire that is not going to wear down the center quite as quickly, gives you better straight line stability at high speeds and give you better traction in the turns. Now that is all still true and stays true for the front in the Pilot Power 3 and their rear however gets what they call 2CT plus technology. So it is going to be the similar concept with the firmer rubber in the center and the softer rubber on the shoulders. What they have done now is they have actually taken that center rubber that's a firmer compound and they have extended that underneath all the way down in the shoulders and the softer compound is laid up on the top of the harder rubber. First question I had was well if you wear that tire out are you going to ever reach that firmer rubber and that was not the intent for the design behind that. The intent design was to give you a stiffer carcass in this area. Michelin's have been known to be fairly soft tires and they are very tire pressure sensitive. One thing that can happen with a tire with a very soft carcass especially when you are really pushing hard and cranking on it over in a turn getting on the throttle you start getting tread distortion and the tire is going to start warping on you and you start to feel the tire slide out on you. This tire is going to have a little bit more stability both in a straight line and the corner high speed sweepers no problem corner exit no problem you are going to have a tire that can hold up to that amount of stress. Its going to give you that really nice soft rubber but also have the harder carcass. If you were looking on a scale 1 to 4 on rubber hardness then the softest rubber is going to be on the shoulders on the front tire. Number one is the shoulders of the front tire and number two is on the shoulders of the rear tire, number three is actually the center of the front tire and then the hardest rubber of them all is in the center of the rear tire. Another comparison that has been made between the 2CTs and the Pilot Power 3s is some lap time testing by Michelin. The Pilot Power 3 put down 4.5 seconds faster lap times in wet weather conditions and 4 seconds in dry conditions better than the respectable Pilot Power 2CT's. Hey guys this is Reuben with Competition Accessories and welcome to our real world review of the Michelin Pilot Power 3 tires. Now my good friends Sean and Danielle which are actually a husband and wife riding team here, couples that ride together stay together right guys? Cool so its awesome to have them out here, they both have the new Pilot Power 3s on their bikes and we have Sean here who is an advanced level very experienced track rider in all types of riding. Then Danielle who obviously has the female point of view here and this is actually her very first track day so we are really stoked for her to be out here on her first track day. They both are on the brand new Pilot Power 3 tires which are replacing the Pilot Power Pure which happened to be you guys favorite tire. You guys ran those tires for years and I remembered you crying when they first announced they were going away. I balled like a baby and Reuben was kind enough to let us know that these were going to be new on the market so we figured why not we had good success with the pures that we would try these out. So far we are sitting right in the neighborhood of about 2500 miles on them and I still love them. So run me down it from the beginning from when you threw them on after the Pures and you initial impression on them. We were fortunate we swapped them out and it was still cold weather. We out them on and probably two days with having them on I had a little break from work and had an opportunity to take them out and we have a little shake down road not to terribly far from where we live. We threw them on the bikes, Danielle took the lead and she never scrubbed in her own set of tires so we get going down there and she turns around on the seat saying she loves them and I am thinking to myself oh my god woman they are cold there not scrubbed in yet and im like you need to chill out, relax, and 2 miles later she is gone and I am struggling trying to keep up with her. They warm up super quick, they were fantastic in the rain because the day we chose to scrub them in it was raining. Just fantastic right out the box and I don't think I have ever had a tire that did that. Confidence is such big thing in what we do and if you feel uncomfortable with your tires then your not going to have fun. So getting a good tire under you that you can trust is a big part of having a good time on your motorcycle. Danielle what about you coming from I know you have had a few different type of tires what was your first impression of these tires. My first impression of these was that they broke in real fast they heated up real fast like my husband said I have never fully broken in a set of tires on my own. I have always had someone else scrub them in and with these tires there is no break in time at all. They were sticky they were warm they were ready to go. It was about 50 degrees so it was cold that morning so having a tire that heated up that fast that quickly in those weather conditions was awesome. It is a very sticky reliable tire so that is great and it also is predictable. Well we have a full detailed review of the tires that cover all the specs and the different types of rubber that goes into the construction of the tire. The real interesting feature of the tires is the 2CT dual compound technology that they have used in the back tire. Which takes that center firm compound and extends down underneath the shoulders of the tire to give the tire better cornering stability and less flex when you are under a load and you know these 1000s are putting some serious stress on these tires. So Sean you are throwing some pretty hot laps here in the advanced group tell us a little bit about the tire. The biggest thing I have noticed by the 2nd session around the 4th lap they are getting a little soft but they are still super sticky they still are very reliable but they are starting to slip just a little bit. That can be expected though I mean it is 80 degrees out here the humidity is 80% and under load on full acceleration she does kind of skip just a little bit but if your expecting that and ready for that then again it is predictable. When these tires first came out we were thinking they were more of a 50/50 tire Michelin since came out and said that it is an 85% street tire and 15% track tire. It is a high performance street tire that you can take to the track so it is perfect for you guys wanting a tire that is great for around town use and hitting the twisties on the weekends. You can still take it to a track day and still have a good time on it. It is not a full dedicated track tire even though Michelin does make some great ones of those but for the all around sport rider that's looking for good high performance tires that does well on the street or on the track then the Pilot Road 3 is a great option. It is a very good tire overall for the what you are looking for in the street riding mostly and the occasional track days. One of the things that was a concern when it first came out was we noticed that it started to get a line in the carcass where the softer compound rubber would meet the harder rubber. After the first run today that line disappeared. You out the tire on the bike and your oh my god what is that line and it is where the transition for the rubber is and it will go away. Now about the profile of the tire the Pilot Power 2CT's are very aggressive and have a steep drop off and the bike just falls right in, these are more round and you throw it into a corner and it is just a very smooth transition. I actually did a write up about these tires on YouTube discussing the ridge and how you can feel it with your fingers but not actually while your riding with the tires. Its a very smooth and the contact patch is great. There is no uneven wear between commuting and track days. Last thing I want to mention is you said you had these tires in wet weather and how did they do? One of the reasons we switched to the pures is because Danielle was having some confidence issues when the tires got wet we went to pures and they were fantastic and she got over her fear. We went to these and we have been caught in the rain 3 times on major trips and it hasnt slowed her down one bit. The confidence on them the sipes, how it channels the water its a fantastic tire. Those are some pretty convincing reviews if I could say so. I havent personally ran the tires on my bike but you guys are making it sound pretty attractive.
