For those of you who take protection and comfort very seriously, who push your bikes to the limit, or who need a technical boot for the track (or all of the above), the Gaerne GP-1 is a boot built for people like you. The Gaerne GP-1 boots most prominent feature is the Gaerne Floating System, which is a Carbon Composite ankle brace that provides a lot of lateral support, but is hinged for natural front to back movement. While this piece comprises a large percentage of the boots structure, it does not add a lot of weight, thanks to the high-tech materials that are used.

The fantastic ankle support isn't the only great thing about these boots, however. A nice large, replaceable shin plate protects the front of the leg, while the adjustable calf closure system allows different sized riders to get a custom fit, whether the boots are being worn over your race leathers or under a pair of jeans. The toe slider is also replaceable, and features a trick magnesium insert that looks great and is also long-wearing. Magnesium is also used at the back of the heel to promote sliding, and the shock absorbing heel cup is designed with a special decompression zone between the insole and the sole. Two rubber inserts at the inner calf and heel provide grip for the sides of the boot (for holding on to the bike), and also provide some additional protection from heat.

All of these technical protective features are great, but you may be wondering if these these boots are comfortable? In a word: yes. They are constructed from Lorica, which is a synthetic leather. Lorica is lighter, more abrasion resistant, more breathable, and requires virtually no break in when compared with leather. This translates to a boot that is comfortable right out of the box. The inside of the Gaerne GP-1 boots has been well thought out as well. They are lined with an antibacterial and breathable pre-shaped liner, and the removable insole has shock absorbing material to absorb vibrations as well as add walking comfort. The sole of the Gaerne GP-1 Boots is both oil and wear resistant, and is made from multiple densities of rubber that provides good grip both on and off the bike.

If you are a rider who wants only the best in both protection and comfort, the Gaerne GP-1 boots are a definite top contender. Whether you take it to the track or the canyons, the Gaerne GP-1 boots are sure to keep you both safe and comfortable, and would be a solid choice for your feet.

I purchased these boots after trying 2 other brands. One brand was very narrow throughout & the other being generously wide lacked the dexterity that I was looking for. The Gaerne seem to strike a reasonable balance. Although marketed as race boots, I use them for daily commute & my occasional track days. They are a great race boot & a decent all around boot.I will start with that what is important in a race boot1Ankle protection is excellent. Your ankle will not twist, will not hyper extend. I haven't tested these features but you can feel it when you wear it. 2The sole is dexterous & not overly stiff yet not overly soft like a touring boot. Provides great feel for the pegs & the controls. 3Toe slider is great, its metal & slides without any catch. Provides great confidence when leaned over & lets you take your mind off your feet & concentrate on riding as you will know that your toes will slide comfortably if they touch the ground. 4The caff adjustment system is really nice, takes seconds to adjust to different caff sizes.5The entry system is very easy. They kept it simple with just a zipper & velcro. Done. No laces, no booties, no gimmicks. What makes it a decent all around boot1They dont market them as waterproof but I feel they are water resistant. Last weeks commute involved rain riding for an hour & my feet were dry. Though it was light rain & not a down pour. 2They are comfortable when you are standing in them. Walking, well for me they don't work well because of the toe box see cons The cons1The boot would have been 100 comfy if it weren't for the narrow toe box. My toes start to hurt after sometime if I am not riding. This was evidenced last weekend when I had the boots on the whole day at the track day & I was walking about the paddock in them. The rest of the boot is fine. 2The shin slider is made of flimsy plastic The toe slider is a nice metal piece, don't know when Gaerne decided to cut corners to make the shin slider plastic. Perhaps they think that mere mortals like me will never slider their shins 3The shin guard is beefy but a very odd V shaped design. This makes it hard to wear the boots under riding pants or in my case under my Aerostich 1 pc suit. Overall, I am happy with my purchase & at the current closeout price they are a far better value than the other brands. When riding they disappear & you do not think much about them & that is what matters.

I've owned Sidi boots for years and have been happy with the fit, construction and protection. However, I decided to purchase these Gaerne GP-1 boots because they were on sale, AND my Sidis are well used so I figured what the heck. Not to mention Gaerne has a good reputation.Immediately after slipping my foot in and cinching them up I was grossly disappointed at how sloppy they felt. Partly because they were flat out too large and very loose in the ankle region. As far as sizing goes here is my experience. I wear a 10.5 in most shoes, and 11 in some. I own 3 pairs of Sidi boots in both road and motocross and wear size 11 EU 45 in both models and they fit well. So, I purchased the Gaerne boots in a size 11 EU 46 but they feel HUGE Even after cinching everything up I felt like I was swimming in ankle region and I'm not convinced a smaller size will make me feel confident the protection will be there.In summary, I will return these boots because I'm not convinced they are superior in design to Sidis. The thing I really like about the Sidis is the ability to snug the boots up yet still have good flexibility and protection.
