Hey guys this is Reuben with Competition Accessories and welcome to our video review of the all new Dunlop Sportmax Q3 tires which is an awesome new tire from Dunlop. There is a lot of buzz about this tire because they have done some really interesting things with the construction of it. Up here on the scale we have the old Q2 which was really an awesome tire to begin with. A lot of people of surprised that Dunlop so quickly came out with the Q3. What they have done is some really cool things with the construction of the Q3 that we will talk about in a little bit. One thing I want to note about the Q3 is they are using carbon fiber in the side walls of the tire. What that does is it provides a more stiff carcass on the side walls and up on the edges of the tire so that when you are really cranked over in a turn on the gas or on the brakes hard or really pushing through a turn hard then this tire is not going to deform as easily because the structure of the tire is going to be able to hold up a little more abuse. Where as a softer carcass is going to diffuse or deform a little bit more and that is going to give you a more vague feeling in the corners. This tire has better cornering stability and but it still retains that nice rubber compound on the outer portion of the tire that the Q2 is famous for. Consider it a 50/50 tire so it is 50% on the street and 50% on the track. Keep in mind that this is a Hyper-sport tire that is designed for grip not tread life. Don't get these and expect them to last thousands and thousands of miles because you are going to wear them out quickly. The reason I have the Q2 up on the scale, I will apologize up front I wish I had the exact same size in the Q2 all we have left currently is 170 rears and in the Q3 I have a 180 in the rear. That's actually more impressive though because I have the 170 in the Q2 which is 10 mm more narrow or its a smaller tire than the 180 in the Q3. I want you to take a look at the scale here, I actually have it zeroed out for the stand that's on here so we are only getting the weight of the actual tire itself. SO the Q2 in the 170 comes in at 14.45 so almost 14.50 pounds for the Q2. I will go ahead and throw the Q3 up on the scale and it weighs in at 13.55 even though it is a bigger tire it is almost a pound lighter than the Q2. Remember that is rotational mass you might not think that is a huge number but that is unsprung wait so your suspension is soaking up bumps and things like that and the weight that is below the suspension is a key factor in how well that suspension can react to bumps in the road and quick changes to your bikes handling. Rotational mass, remember as you accelerate or brake this thing has to speed up or slow down with your wheel same thing for the front tire so shaving off some weight there is actually a huge way to gain performance in both acceleration and braking and also turning because the gyroscopic effect when you are turning in you are kind of fighting that and having less mass on the outside edges of your wheels and tires is a huge way to gain some performance. They have shaved off some weight on these tires which is another way to really significantly improve the advantages you have both on the street and the track, I havent had a chance to ride on these yet but I have very high hopes on how they will perform. Now lets talk about some other things, obviously the carbon fiber is cool and we can all geek out about that but some of the other kind of everyday factors that we need to look at. Number one they have retained their intuitive response profile, so that's the profile of the tire or how the tire falls off to the side and the Q2's and the Q3's should also be a very linear tire it doesn't fall off super aggressively or super suddenly but its also not a heavy feeling tire what it does for you when you turn it in if you have to make any line adjustments you know when your in a corner you have to widen up because you see some gravel or you know maybe you are passing someone at the track and you need to make some adjustments or maybe your line choice wasnt perfect when you turned in and you need to tighten up or widen up when your in a corner this allows you to move the bike around while it is leaned over without it feeling like your on a razor edge you know. It gives you a real nice contact patch and the contact actually increases quite a bit as you lean over further which increases the amount of grip that you have. Another thing to really look at with the design of the Q3 is the lan-c ratio and what that refers to is the ratio of grooves rain grooves versus solid rubber that you have. If you look at the Q2's you can see that you have lots of little rain grooves throughout the sides and down the center of tire and it still did very well wet weather performance was decent on these as well. What they have done with the Q3 is they have extended the length of these center longitudinal rain grooves so they are kind of longer and go a little bit further and that is going to help evacuate more water when you are riding in the rain obviously when you are riding in the rain you typically don't crank it as far over as you would in dry weather so they are not concerned as much as the sides of the shoulders here. You still do retain some rain grooves on the side but if you compare the teo you will see that there is way more rubber hitting the ground on the side of the Q3's. Again for dry performance I think you going to have a lot of grip with these tires. They have said that the wet weather performance has improved as well. They hit a home run there with the tread design and the performance in dry and wet weather conditions. Another thing they have brought over from the Q2 on the rear only is their multi-tread compound. All that means is it is a dual compound tire where you have a little bit more firmer rubber in the center of the tire and then the shoulders they move over to a softer rubber. Quickly we will talk about the front that we have up here, pretty similar profile to the Q2 with the intuitive response profile. Rain grooves down the center that you can see there and this is just a single compound to give you a lot of grip in the corners. Very cool tire technology that dunlop has incorporated in their tires and remember these are made and manufactured in the USA. That is another cool selling point as well.
