Glad I bought the TZ-R: When you have a cheap helmet, you really don't know what you're missing until you get a good one.
My previous helmet was an HJC. It lasted a while, and I'm sure it did a fine job protecting my head thankfully, I never needed to test that, but once I had the Shoei and was able to compare them, I quickly sold the HJC.
The three biggest differences were in fit, noise, and cooling. The Shoei has a much more snug fit and feels a lot more comfortable on the road. There is very little play in it compared to the HJC. Wind noise and noise from my exhaust is also muffled much better with the Shoei, and the vents work better as well I ride in Georgia and Florida regularly, to the vents are important!. Not to mention, one of the plastic vent sliders broke on my HJC after only about six months. My girlfriend's KBC became worthless after less than a dozen uses when the clip that the visor attaches to cracked in half for no particular reason.
