From now on, every time you use the word “Sturgis,” you’ll have to pay organizers of the legendary event a nickel. Well, not exactly, but Sturgis Motorcycle Rally Inc. has just obtained a trademark for the word “Sturgis” from the Federal Trademark Registration.
The trademark covers all goods and services related to the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally.
“Sturgis Motorcycle Rally Inc. announced today that its word mark STURGIS has obtained a federal trademark registration in connection with Sturgis Rally goods and services,” the company stated in a press release.
Distributors of Sturgis Motorcycle Rally merchandise will now be required to source their products through official licensees. The SMRI said that retailers can go through Good Sports Inc./Hot Leathers, Black Hills Rally and Gold, Tom’s T’s, Noble Wear Ltd., Jack Daniels Image Sellers, Capsmith Inc., M&J Distributing, C&D Sales, and Valiant Vineyards.
“This was certainly anticipated for a number of months, but is nevertheless an exciting development for the future protection, promotion and long-term health of the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally,” said John E. Johnson, who sits on the board of SMRI. “It also helps to further solidify the future of charitable giving offered from several organizations around the Sturgis area through licensed use of the marks.”
