Electric_motorcycleThe electric motorcycle market is rapidly growing around the world. More and more motorcycles and scooters powered by electricity are hitting the road, and some experts predict that the number of electric two wheel vehicles on the road could be well above the 100 million within the next 5 years.

Currently, there are about 17 million electric motorcycles and scooters on the road. A new study by Pike Research shows that that number could expand to more than 138 million by 2017.

“Electric motorcycles and scooters have strong appeal for many consumers,” says senior analyst Dave Hurst.  “They are relatively low cost to own, do not take a lot of space, and are easy to maintain, therefore making them attractive for city dwellers.  Governments also like these vehicles because they can utilize existing transportation and electricity infrastructure without the congestion problems and emissions impacts of conventional automobiles.”

Because the demand for electric vehicles seems to be more about convenience than speed, Hurst believes that the e-scooter industry will represent more than 80% of the electric two-wheel global market.

With the rise in popularity, Pike Research also predicts that the battery industry is at the beginning of a massive boob. Lithium ion and lead acid batteries will be used in most electric motorcycles and scooters.

Electric motorcycles are becoming more capable every day. Chip Yates just set a landspeed record with his electric motorcycle, nearly reaching 200 mph, and the TTXGP racing series was just officially sanctioned by the FIM.

There is no doubt that there is a bright future ahead for electric motorcycles.
