alvaro_bautistaAfter an optimistic doctors checkup, Alvaro Bautista is hopeful that he’ll be ready to race at Estoril. Bautista broke his left femur in Qatar, and has already missed the first two rounds of the 2011 MotoGP season.

Bautista was told that his injury was progressing nicely during a checkup at the Hospital USP San José de Madrid on Tuesday afternoon.

“We’ve been looking at the X-rays they took of me this afternoon with Dr Villamor and it appears that the bone is forming well and there’s less risk of it not healing well,” Bautista explained to motogp.com.

Bautista was replaced by John Hopkins at the Spanish GP, but the Rizla Suzuki rider is anxious to get back on the bike. He even mounted the Suzuki GSV-R last week, to make sure he didn’t lose the feel for the bike.

“We still have 17 days before I need to get back on a bike. The doctor said everything is going reasonably quickly and that’s my objective,” Bautista said. “I have two weeks in which to work and gain strength in the leg. Before travelling to Estoril I will have another consultation with the medical team, they’ll do fresh X-rays to ensure everything’s fine and the idea is to return in Portugal.”

The next race is on May 1st, which gives Bautista a little more than two weeks to recover. Bautista may be a little optimistic about his return, but he’ll definitely be doing everything he can to return to the paddock as soon as possible.

“It’s still not 100% certain, but the only thing on my mind is returning and my aim is to do that in Estoril,” Bautista said. “It’ll be a decision for the medical team, but they’ve told me that if I continue at this pace there is a good chance. There is still a lot of hard work ahead if I want to get back to a suitable physical condition for MotoGP.”

As of right now, the Rizla Suzuki team has not made any plans to replace Bautista at Estoril. John Hopkins, who filled in for Bautista in Jerez, will be busy with the British Superbike series on May 1st.
