“I’m very happy to win this race,” Gaviria said. “I didn’t expect it. It’s wonderful to be here in first place.”
Gaviria, along with fellow Colombians Stefano Mesa and Tomas Puerta, led the Supersport riders around the Daytona track. James Rispoli was the only rider who was able to challenge the Colombians, but eventually Rispoli too found himself more than10 seconds adrift.
Up front, the battle for victory heated up as Gaviria and Puerta, both on LTD Yamahas, swapped places while Mesa waited for an opportunity to make a move.
“It feels really good to be on the podium at Daytona,” Rispoli said. “It was a great race, I was just trying to keep up with the leaders.”
Puerta, who won the first Supersport race, was disappointed with his second place finish. Puerta held the lead on the final lap, but a last second effort by Gaviria stole the victory by .04 seconds.
“I do not like second,” Puerta said. “I tried to give myself a little gap, but Gaviria caught me right at the end.”
