Dymag logoDymag wheels have enjoyed a rather positive industry reputation for many years and their products have seen extensive use on roads and circuits all over the world. That was until 2009 and the worst economic downturn since the Great Depression hit Dymag hard, and they had to enter administration – thus the factory ceased production and shut down. It was sad news for the entire industry.

The Dymag tale started in the early 1970’s, and it was a little chaotic in the beginning. However, once they created the very first three-spoke magnesium racing wheel on the market, the little English company’s fortunes soon took off. It did not hurt that motorcycle racing legend Eddie Lawson used Dymag’s new technology to win the AMA Superbike Championship in 1981 and 1982, as well as to conquer the FIM Motorcycle Grand Prix World Championship in 1984. After this success, motorcycle and automobile racing teams of both modern and vintage machines came calling at Dymag asking to buy their wheels. The factory was selling them as fast as theyDymag Wheels in Production could produce them. There were many good years afterward, and they did do quite well for nearly 40 years. Unfortunately, the Great Recession seriously reduced, or eliminated, the money their customers very much needed for racing and the orders dried up; Dymag was unable to survive.

Enter CSA International Limited, a Singapore-based conglomerate, which purchased Dymag at the end of 2010 with the intention of reviving the passion. Chris Shelley, Chairman of CSA, has stated that they are working very hard to improve the manufacturing process and significantly reduce lead times for deliveries.

Given that they now have ownership of over four decades of motorcycle and wheel design combined with the experience of producing those incredible wheels, there is much to expect. Dymag has a long racing pedigree and many advanced materials technologies, and that will certainly be an important part of their future succession back to the top of their niche. According to Shelley, the new ownership will use the indelible passion for and at Dymag and constant innovation to drive the brand well into the 21st century.

In fact, in an attempt to better tell the complete Dymag story, the company is attempting to round up stories from racing enthusiasts who have an anecdote or memories which involve the iconic hoops. Much has changed since Dymag first sent their wheels into the world, and they want to be able to capture their ascendancy to one of the world’s preeminent racing companies. Production is already underway for the Dymag Classic H3, in 17 and 18 inch sizes, the Superbike SB5 17 inch, and the Road Racing TT3 magnesium wheels – you can place an order right now. The very popular five-spoke carbon fiber motorcycle wheels are starting their production phase as well. The entire line is available for a wide array of motorcycle makes and models, and they are fully approved for racing and street use.

The road certification only applies in the United Kingdom and Japan currently, and nothing is known about any plans for other export markets at this time.
