Geils Band’s Centerfold, and Survivor’s Eye of the Tiger. At the movies E.T. is winning hearts and audiences. And Stallone sheds Rocky and becomes Rambo in First Blood. David Letterman debuts on Late Night, and the Weather Channel launches. The average new car runs $7,983. A gallon of gas goes for $1.30 and a new Husqvarna WR250 will set you back $2,545.

Number One Motorcycle Trend For 1982:
Turbo chargers, used in automobile applications for a few years are making their way into the motorcycle business. Honda previewed their CX500 Turbo in ’81, and brought it to market in ’82. Yamaha has introduced their Turbo Seca 650 and Suzuki supposedly has one in the works. No word from Kawasaki.

Brad Lackey, Suzuki, becomes first American to win 500cc World Motocross title.

Danny LaPorte is first American to win world 250cc Motocross Championship.

Danny “Magoo” Chandler and his Honda leads four-man team to victory at Trophee Des Nations, and scoops up another two wins with the “Superbiker” race in Carlsbad and USGP.

Eddie Lawson wins his second US Superbike title on his Kawasaki KZ1000.

Ricky Graham wins the GNC.

Wrangler Jeans to sponsor AMA Supercross Series.

AMA agrees to sanction an eight race Battle of the Twins series.

Daytona – Freddie Spencer wins Superbike race aboard his Honda. Graeme Crosby on a Yamaha wins the F1 200 miler. Rich Schlacter takes the 250GP class for Yamaha.irst woman to finish the 200 miler. Speed reached by Superbikes at Daytona would have qualified them for 10th position on the F1 grid.

Other Issues
For the first time Japanese OEs begin to advertise price reductions on new motorcycles.

Harley’s Sportster is 25 years old.

Insurance companies indicate that insurance rates for turbos will be twice that of bikes of similar displacement without turbos.

Til Thompson’s popular rally in Ruidoso, NM, Aspencade, ends. Bill Dutcher, starts new Aspencade in New York.

Goodyear tires depart the motorcycle business citing high production costs and decreasing sales.
Harley announces intent to seek relief through the FTC from Japanese competitors. They sold 56,000 motorcycles in 1981.

MIC reports 92% of motorcyclists are male. Median age is 24.

1,225,000 motorcycles are imported in ’81, only 1,045,00 are sold. There are an estimated 550,000 unsold motorcycles on dealer showrooms and 540,000 in OE warehouses. The market is in big trouble.
