checa_phillip_island_race_1Carlos Checa has been unstoppable this weekend. After leading the free practice session and claiming the first Superpole of the 2011 World Superbike season, Checa raced to the first victory of the season today at Phillip Island.

Checa earned the pole position with a record setting lap, but Biaggi was close behind during the qualifying session. It was a different story during the first race of the season, as Checa claimed victory over the 2010 World Superbike champion by more than four seconds.

Checa grabed the lead over Eugene Laverty on lap three, and he never looked back.

Leon Haslam completed finished third at Phillip Island, putting a Ducati an Aprilia and a BMW machine up on the podium for opening day. A couple of Yamahas followed, as Lavery inched out Marco Melandri for the fourth place spot.

Michel Fabrizio was the quickest Suzuki at Phillip Island, finishing in sixth place ahead of Jakub Smrz and Tom Sykes. Nitro Noriyuki Haga and Troy Corser finished out the top ten.

Sylvain Guintoli, who was having an impressive opening weekend at Phillip Island, crashed out of contention today. Guintoli injured his right hand, knee, and shoulder blade, and will not be participating in race 2.
