The dediKato Auction, named in honor of Daijiro Kato who was killed at Suzuka during MotoGP practice on 6 April 2003, was postponed due to another horrific incident at the Grand Prix of San Marino where Shoya Tomizawa lost his life in the Moto2 race on 5 September 2010. The link is unmistakable, but it is good that something good and positive comes from the tragedy of such enormous loss. The event will run from 29 October through to 8 November 2010 and will be held on online auction site eBay.
All proceeds from this event will all be sent to the Italian Cystic Fibrosis Research Foundation, which was founded by Matteo Marzotto to search for innovative cures and educate the public about the disease – certainly a worthy cause.
On offer are many items which are sourced from several present and former motorcycle racing greats. One Shoei helmet on offer is said to have the signatures of every rider who is sponsored by the legendary Japanese company. Valentino Rossi has handed over a pair of his boots, as did Nicky Hayden and Dani Pedrosa. Moto2 World Champion Toni Elias donated not just his boots, but his gloves too. Marco Simoncelli donated his gloves and Marco Melandri his race leathers. Several other special items will be posted. One in particular is quite interesting – Simoncelli took his socks off during the introductory event to the auction, called ‘dediKato 2010’, (held on the eve before the original auction date in September at Misano), signed them and then donated them right on the spot. I hope they were fresh…
Serious thought was given to another decision made after the postponement announcement was made. Misano Eventi, the Misano Adriatico Town Council, Team San Carlo Gresini and the Cystic Fibrosis Research Foundation all agreed that one very special item would not be auctioned. A helmet painted by artist ONE (Andrea Criscione), which featured an image of Kato and signed by every motorcycle racer at the aforementioned dediKato event. The helmet was presented to the family of Shoya Tomizawa at the Misano circuit by the Mayor of Misano, Stefano Giannini, and the President of Misano Eventi, Luigi Bellettini.
The Misano Town Council, Misano Eventi, the Republic of San Marino, the Province of Rimini (in Italy where Misano is actually located) and Santa Monica SPA have all promised to work on an event to honor the fallen Tomizawa-san every year during the San Marino Grand Prix. He will not be forgotten.
