Hey guys this is reuben with competition accessories welcome to our first look at the all new shoei neotec which a new modular helmet from shoei a very popular helmet manufacture that makes some quality products theyve had the multitec in their lineup for several years and it has been a very popular choice for long distance touring riders commuters and those who just simply prefer the convenience of a flip up modular helmet but with the shoei neotec shoei has taken what was very popular with the multitec and they added a ton of upgraded features to it to make it just the ultimate long distance touring helmet/commuting helmet and its going to be I think a homerun now one thing I did want to stress the neotec is not a replacement for the multitec and were actually going to do a separate video with an in depth comparison between the neotec and the multitec so well have a link to that in this video if you want to see a comparison between the neotec and multitec for now were just going to take a in depth look at the neotec and what makes it really a fantastic helmet first things first the shell of the neotec is using shoeis aim shell which is called their advanced integrated matrix its basically a blend of fiberglass and other composite materials resulting in a very strong shell since modular helmets dont have a seamless chin bar its important in a modular for the shell itself to be extra stiff and strong and with the multitec you have that nice strong aim shell that you dont get in less expensive helmets that might be above poly carbon at variety for example now the chin bar of the multitec is poly carbon and thats to keep the weight down especially when your riding with the chin bar in the raised position or if your just wearing the helmet with the chin bar raised having lighter weight in the chin bar is going to definitely really help in that regard so your carrying a bunch of weight on the top of your head the neotec comes with an all new shield which is called the cns 1 shield its both taller and wider than the shield that came with the multitec but probably the biggest claim to fame for the neotec is the new internal drop down visor system now we have seen this on many other helmet manufactures and helmet models but what shoei has done is something a little different you get first of all its a dark smoke internal sun shield which is anti fog coated and if youll notice the shell here theyve actually built a recess into the shell itself so rather than compromising the thickness of the eps liner which is the foam inside the helmet where most manufactures basically shave some of that away to fit that little face shield up inside when its in the race position what shoeis done you can actually see theyve raised the front portion of the shell slightly so you would have room to raise that internal sun visor without compromising the integrity of the eps liner so that if you do have an impact on your forehead area your still going to have maximum foam there so its going to do a good job absorbing the impact we talked about the internal shield being anti fog coated the external face shield while its new wider taller eye port it also comes with a pinlock insert I do have the pinlock here it did come with the helmet you can see on this little illustration here it provides plenty of coverage and basically what the pinlcok is its a small flexible pane which you install between these posts and basically when you take the shield off you can install the pinlock system its going to lay on the inside of the shield right between these and it has a small gasket thats going to create a shield or seal excuse me around the edge of the shield itself and what that does is gives you a dual layered shield which is going to do a good job at reducing fog and so if you ride in colder conditions and you want to install that thts going to come with the helmet another thing that shoei has really improved versus the multitec is the all new ventilation system you have a chin bar vent which is going to direct air up onto the face shield which is also going to help with fogging and then you have a 3 position top air scoop its going to work just like a ram air effect its got a fully closed position and then a partially opened position and then fully opened as you ride you can see it is nice and tall up on the top of the helmet so its designed for the more upright riding position but basically air is going to be forced into the helmet and then it will be channeled throughout the helmet keeping you comfortable and then this is something that we did not see all in the multitec but its a rear exhaust vent which is also closable so you have a small slider switch here which will allow warm air to escape as you ride the new chin bar is going to give you 8 more millimeters of chin room inside the helmet thats fantastic for a couple of things number 1 if your going to install a communication systems and you want to have a microphone inside the helmet having that little bit of extra room is going to be nice and then also if you find that your just kinda cramped in some other helmets especially modulars where you might feel like the chin bar is just a little close to your face then the new neotec is going to give you a little bit more room in that area to raise the chin bar theres basically just a simple release mechanism in the front here you just squeeze down on that which is going to release the pins and it raises completely up one thing I did want to point out is the shield and the chin bar pivet on the same point as you can see there is a little torse bolt there and thats basically the pivot point for both the shield and the chin bar which is going to give you a nice fluid motion as you open either one so well go ahead and raise the internal sun shield there and another thing I wanted you to see is all the hardware for the latching mechanism is made of stainless steal so both the latches that are built into the chin bar itself and the posts that it latches to are going to be stainless steal you do get a chin curtain that is included with the neotec which is removable so if you want to have a little bit more air flow or you can just get that out of the way you can remove that another aspect that shoei has paid attention to is the way that this helmet flow through the air now ive already taken this helmet out on the road I hit the freeway doing about 70 mph it has really good wind manners its stable at speeds its also surprisingly fairly quiet for a modular helmet a lot of times modulars are little bit more noisey because you have those extra gaps and spaces throughout the helmet that you dont get in a typical full face helmet nut one thing I wanted you to see is shoei has incorporated on the edge of the chin bar they call it their vortex generator lip basically its just a little lip to the edge of the chin bar which is going to push air away from the gap between the chin bar and the shell so thats going to just reduce wind noise as air flows over this gap its basically directed up over the gap and then its going to cleanly flow back around the back of the shell there so thats just another little attention to detail that shoei has put into the engineering of this helmet now take a look at the inside of this helmet shoei has finally given you a fully removable interior on the modular helmet so you have fully removable cheek pads and a fully removable crown liner another thing I wanted to point out here is shoei has also given you a little ear pad that sits right in the part where your ear will sit and that is another piece of engineering thats basically going to help absorb sound so its going to keep that helmet nice and quiet going to give you a nice quiet ride so those are removable so if you want to run a communication system you can pull these little ear pads out of the helmet and then you have plenty of space in there for a little communication speaker if you wanted to install that as well but I thought that was a pretty neat little feature have little sound absorbing ear pads there and then the cheek pads themselves can be removed with a few snaps and around the edge the whole cheek pad is going to come right out and you can obviously switch those out for different sizes if you need to kinda customize the fit of the helmet oh another thing I wanted to point out right above the cheek pad here theres a small notch and this is a feature found in all shoei helmets but that notch is there to accommodate eye glasses so huge selling point for those that wear eye glasses a modular helmet makes it that much more convenient to get your glasses on and off you dont have to fiddle with getting them through the face shield you can just open the chin bar to get your glasses on umm depending on your glasses you may be able to pull your helmet on without taking your glasses off but there is a notch built right into the cheek pad there so that your fram of your eye glasses arent going to bother you while your wearing the helmet the interior is also a dry max material which is going to be a moisture wicking fabric basically in warmer weather if you sweat in the helmet its going to manage moisture well and help absorb your sweat and it will evaporate to keep you comfortable you can remove the crown liner as we mentioned its just a couple of snaps around the back and front and youll see that they use a 3d liner with several openings throughout the helmet liner so that the ventilation system can actually reach your skin another thing that your going to really notice is that if you take a look at the inside of this helmet is the ventilation features now we mentioned already that this is a major upgrade from the multitec your going to get a lot of ventilation with this helmet but you can just see the engineering that goes into the interior of this helmet there is many air channels as air is pushed into these different vents its going to flow through this helmet reaching different parts of your head and then you have the exhaust vent at the back of the shell and then there is also air channels that are going to flow the air all the way through to the base of the helmet shell here another thing to notice is this center top portion that goes around the crown is actually a separate eps liner so they use a dual eps liner in this helmet that allows them to do two things one it allows them to build in additional air channels behind the eps so that the vent is really maximized and effective but another thing that it allows shoei to do is use multiple densities of foam so certain parts of the helmet are going to use more dense foam other parts are going to use a softer foam and thats all to absorb as much impact as possible and to progressively absorb impact so upon impact that softer foam is going to initially absorb some of the impact and it is going to progressively get into the firmer foam and hopefully manage those forces as good as possible so that is the review of the shoei neotec helmet this helmet comes with shoeis five year warranty another real neat thing that shoei does is there free drop inspection program so if you actually drop the helmet off of your bike or otherwise think that there might be a problem with the internal aspects of the helmet in case youve maybe had a fall and your not really sure how hard you hit your head or if you hit it you ccan actually send the helmet into shoei and they will do a free inspection for you and let you know if its till good to go or not so thats definitely a good thing to take advantage of as well the shoei neotec is manufactured in 3 different shell sizes so x-small through medium are going to be in one shell and then large is going to be in a shell of its own xlarge and 2x large are going to be in that third shell size which allows them to build a shell that is optimized for your head size check out the Hey guys this is Reuben at competition accessories and welcome to our comparison video for the all new shoei Neotec versus the Multitec now both of these are fantastic modular helmets from shoei who is a premium helmet manufacturer the Multitec has been in their line up for several years the Neotec just came out it was just released so we wanted to take a look at the two helmets to see what makes them different and what makes the Neotec about 170 dollars more when you look at the retail prices now at the first glance one thing you might notice by looking at the front of the helmet is the Multitec is a little bit wider down around the chin bar area and the Neotec is a little bit longer front to back if i actually bring both helmets up you can probably see that the Neotec is significantly longer in shape the Neotec has taken several steps to make it more aerodynamic one thing i did want to point out is at the edge of the chin bar you have a small lip that shoeis incorporated thats what their calling their vortex generator vent basically that is going to direct wind up and away from gap between the chin bar and the rest of the helmet as well away from the slider switch for the internal visor the internal visor is another major upgrade its the first time we have seen an internal sun visor on a shoei helmet it comes with a dark smoke internal sun visor which is anti fog coated obviously the Multitec does not have that and one thing you might see if you look at the shell is there is actually a raised portion of the shell here this is using shoeis aim shell which is advanced intergrated matrix but what theyve done instead of shaving away the interior eps liner to accommodate space for that sun shield they actually built that shell up to have space for the shield without compromising on the thickness of the internal eps foam now when you compare these helmets side to side you might notice that the chin bar comes out a little bit further on the Neotec you do get 8mm more room in the Neotec which is going to allow you to have more breathing room and it also gives you more space for something like a microphone if your installing a communication system both helmets open basically in the same fashion there is a latch here that you squeeze down on and its going to raise the chin bar up but on the Neotec one thing you will notice si the chin bar and face shield pivet on the same plain so the same access they are rotating around as the Multitec here as you raise the chin bar up the shield is a little bit further forward which brings it up a little further back if you look at the back of the helmets when they raise it up you can see that the Neotec actually keeps the shield down nice and low as the Multitec it is sticking up in the wind just a little bit further while were looking at the back of the hlmets here another major difference between the Neotec and the Multitec is the Neotec gives you a closeable rear exhaust vent which you dont have on the Multitec so your going to have just a little bit more air flow but definitely a more aggressive ventilation system on the Neotec you get a rear exhaust vent where as on the Multitec you do not have one and then taking a look at the front vents top ram air on the Neotec is going to force a lot more air in and they are both 3 position sliders but the vent configuration on the Neotec is definitely going to force more air down on into the helmet where as the Multitec just basically has 2 intake ports sitting up on the top and then the chin bar vent on the Multitec looks a little larger but shoei is saying that the chin bar vent on the Neotec is actually going to be a little bit more effective both of those are going to direct air up onto the face shield now another thing that the Neotec has as an advantage over the Multitec is that it does come with a pinlock insert so this is going to come with the Neotec basically its going to install between the posts inside the face shield and that is going to give you a complete anti fog system while we are talking about the face shield it is going to be taller and wider then what you had on the Multitec and there is also a new double lip seal around the gasket so you actually have a 2 lip seal but on the Multitec its actually just going to touch on the single lip and then the Neotec has 2 lips which are going to just give it a more secure seal which is again going to help keep natural elements out a little bit better and its going to reduce wind noise keeping the ride a little bit quieter you can TECHNOLOGY THAT HAS COME OVER FROM MOTO GP IS BEING APPLYED NOW TO THIS HELMET FROM HJC SO FANTASTIC OPTION FOR THOSE OF YOU WHO DEMAND THE BEST FROM YOUR GEAR THE RPHA 10 USES THE SAME TYPE OF SHELL MATERIAL AND CONSTRUCTION ITS CALLED THE ADVANCED PREMIUM INTEGRATED MATRIX ITS A COMBINATION OF CARBON FIBER ARAMID AND FIBERGLASS FIBER IN THE SHELL ITSELF ITS A VERY LIGHTWEIGHT DESIGN AS WELL AS BEING VERY STIFF SO ITS GOING TO DISPERSE THAT IMPACT OVER THE LARGEST AREA POSSIBLE ON THE SHELL ITSELF THE BIGGEST CLAIM TO FAME ON THIS HELMET IS THE LIGHTNESS TYPICALLY BECAUSE OF THE HINGES AND THE LATCHING MECHANISMS ON A MODULAR HELMET THEY TEND TO BE A LITTLE BIT MORE ON THE HEAVY SIDE WE THREW THIS ON OUR SHIPPING SCALE 3.55 LBS FOR A SIZE LARGE MODULAR HELMET THAT IS EXTREMELY HING AND EVERYTHING ON A MODULAR BUT YOU CAN SEE WITH THIS HELMET IT IS EXTREMELY FLUSH AND EXTREMELY CLEAN SO AS YOU RIDE THIS IS NOT GOING TO GENERATE A LOT OF WIND NOISE OR DRAG AND ITS ALSO NOT A BULKY HELMET IN FACT I BROUGHT THIS RPS 10 UP HERE WHICH BY THE WAY HAS BEEN RENAMED THE RPHA 10 AS WELL BUT IF YOU PUT THEM SIDE BY SIDE YOU CAN ACTUALLY SEE RHPA MAX IS NOT THAT MUCH BULKIER THEN ITS ROAD RACE COUSIN SO IT IS VERY VERY LIGHT WEIGHT VERY VERY AERODYNAMIC AND THE THIRD THING ILL SAY IS THAT THE VENTILATION IS GOING TO BE VERY VERY GOOD THAT IS THE OTHER AREA WHERE OTHER MODULAR HELMETS SUFFER THIS HAS THE ADVANCED CHANNELING VENTILATION SYSTEM SO YOULL HAVE A CHIN BAR VENT HERE THAT IS GOING TO DIRECT AIR UP ONTO THE FACE SHIELD AND THEN YOU HAVE A LARGE RAM AIR SCOOP IN THE TOP THIS IS VERY EFFECTIVE AT HARVESTING AIR AND AS YOU RIDE THIS IS GOING TO BE PRESSURIZED AIR CHANNELS WITHIN THE HELMET THAT ARE GOING TO PUSH THAT AIR THREW OUT THE WHOLE HELMET AND THEN OUT THE EFFECTIVE WAY AT KEEPING YOUR HEAD COOL IF YOU LOOK AT THE BACK OF THE RPS 10 THAT I HAVE OVER HERE YOU CAN SEE THE SIMILARITY BETWEEN THE TWO THEY HAVE OBVIOUSLY BROUGHT OVER A LOT OF THE AERODYNAMIC ENGINEERING THAT THEY LEARNED IN MOTO GP AND THEY APPLIED IT TO THIS MODULAR HELMET SO ITS VERY RARE THAT YOU CAN SEE A DIRECT CORRELATION FROM RACING EFFORTS TO SOMETHING THAT YOU CAN ACTUALLY BUY FOR THE STREET AND FOR YOU TOURING GUYS THAT IS FANTASTIC NEWS SO YOU HAVE GREAT EXHAUST VENTS OUT THE BACK HERE YOULL SEE THAT AERODYNAMICS AGAIN OF THE SHELL ARE VERY GOOD IT USES A SIMILAR SHIELD SYSTEM AS ITS ROAD RACE COUSIN THIS IS THE HJ 25 SHIELD AND IT HAS A CENTER LOCKING MECHANISM THIS IS GOING TO HELP HOLD THE SHIELD DOWN TIGHT AGAINST THIS GASKET TO PREVENT WATER FROM RUNNING DOWN THE TOP OF THE SHIELD IF YOU GET CAUGHT IN THE RAIN AND IT ALSO SEALS IT UP NICELY REDUCING FROM WIND NOISE SIMPLE TO OPERATE YOU CAN DO IT WITH EITHER HAND BECAUSE ITS RIGHT IN THE CENTER OF THE SHIELD AND ITS NOT IN YOUR VISION I RIDE WITH THE RPS 10 ALMOST DAILY AND IT HAS THE SAME TYPE OF SYSTEM AND WHEN ITS CLOSED ALL THE WAY YOULL SEE ITS NOT IN THE WAY AT ALL YOULL GET USED TO JUST FLIPPING UP IT RELEASES THE LOCK AND YOU CAN ROTATE IT ALL THE WAY UP YOULL SEE THERES SEVERAL D TENTS THROUGHOUT THE RANGE FOR THIS AND THERES AN EASY CRACKED POSSESSION THERE FOR LOW SPEED CITY RIDING OR IN EXTRA FOGGY CONDITIONS SPEAKING OF FOG IF THAT IS SOMETHING YOU BATTLE IT COMES WITH PIN LOCKS FOR A FOG RESISTANT INSERT WITH THEIR 100% MAX VISION INSERTS SO THIS COMES IN THE BOX WITH THE HELMET AND I PULLED IT OUT HERE AND KEEP IN MIND THIS STILL HAS THE PROTECTIVE FILM ON IT SO ITS KIND OF YELLOW LOOKING BUT WHEN YOU PEAL THAT OFF ITS GOING TO BE COMPLETELY CLEAR BASICALLY A PIN-LOCK INSERT HAS A SMALL BEAD THAT GOES ALL THE WAY AROUND AND THATS GOING TO INSTALL ON THE INSIDE OF THE SHIELD IF YOU SEE ON THE SIDE HERE THERE ARE SOME POSTS ONE ON EACH SIDE OF THE SHIELD THOSE ARE GOING TO LINE UP WITH THE CORRESPONDING NOTCHES ON THE PIN-LOCK INSERT AND YOUR GOING TO INSERT THAT ON THE INSIDE OF THE SHIELD YOU WILL HAVE TO REMOVE THE SHIELD TO DO THAT BUT ITS GOING TO CREATE A DUEL PAYNE EFFECT YOU WILL HAVE A LITTLE BEAD OF AIR BETWEEN THE INNER SHIELD AND THE ACTUAL EXTERNAL FACE-SHIELD IT IS UNBEATABLE WHEN IT COMES TO ANTI FOG PROPERTIES IVE USED THIS I USE THESE THROUGHOUT THE WINTER ANY TIME ITS RAINING OR COLD OUT FOG IS ALWAYS AN ISSUE YOU WILL SEE THAT THERE IS A BREATH DEFLECTOR BUILT INTO THIS HELMET AND THAT CHIN-BAR VENT IS GOING TO DIRECT AIR UP ONTO THE CHIN UP ONTO THE FACE SHIELD BUT WHEN THAT IS JUST NOT ENOUGH THIS IS GOING TO REALLY REALLY DO A GOOD JOB AT REDUCING FOG AND YOULL SEE THAT THAT MAX VISION SHIELD THE PIN-LOCK REALLY COVERS A VERY LARGE AREA OF THE FACE SHIELD ITSELF SO YOUR NOT GETTING THAT EDGE IN YOUR VISION YOU GET PLENTY OF VISION OUT OF THE HELMET TAKING A LOOK AT THE FACE SHIELD MECHANISM IT IS VERY SIMPLE TO OPERATE YOU HAVE TRIGGERS ON THE SIDES HERE TO OPEN IT YOUR JUST GOING TO PULL BACK AND YOULL SEE THAT IT JUST POPS THE SHIELD RIGHT OFF SO VERY SIMPLE TO SWAP SHIELDS OUT EASY TO DO YOU CAN ALWAYS SWAP THAT OUT FOR DARK SMOKE OR IF YOU NEED TO INSTALL THE PIN-LOCK ITS EASIER TO KIND OF SPREAD THE SHIELD OUT LIKE THAT LAY IT DOWN IN CLICK THE PINS INTO PLACE AND THEN LET IT SPRING BACK THE OTHER Hey guys this is Reuben with Competition Accessories welcome to our in depth review of the Shoei RF1200. This is obviously the helmet that is replacing the RF1100 and the predecessor before that one was the venerable RF1000 one of the most popular full face Shoei helmets ever. It kind of fits the gap right between their high end X12 race helmet and the Quest which is kind of their entry level touring helmet if you will if I can call any Shoei helmet an entry level. Shoeis not know for building helmet to a price point they build helmets to a quality standard and for a specific purpose. Now the RF1200 and the RF line of helmets is a very good choice if you kind of need a do it all helmet. Your looking at commuting long distance touring weather your on a cruiser or a sport touring bike or a full on sport bike and your attacking the twisties in the canyon on the weekends maybe the occasional track day. This is a great do it all helmet great blend between aerodynamics and ventilation and a nice quiet ride . When you start adding a lot of vents like a lot of race helmets have you start getting a little bit more wind noise and things just aren't quite as practical for street use in a race helmet. So this helmet is a great do it all helmet, and its obviously not as expensive as a race helmet too so there's a bonus there. We have a separate video actually two separate videos on comparing the RF1100 directly with the RF 1200 a kind of head to head comparison and then a real world review Ive actually already taken this out on the bike done some riding in it to give you my impressions kind of my first thoughts on how this helmet handles with wind on the freeway around town definitely a fantastic lid so definitely check those helmets out the videos as well. In this video were just going to talk about the helmet itself and what its made up of . Its coming in four different shell sizes and its Shoeis advanced integrated matrix plus multi fiber shell, so that's what they call their AIM plus shell. Its actually fiber glass and other organic fibers sandwiched together to give you a very strong light weight shell. The shell is your first line of defence, so don't discount how important this is .If you hit your head its going to do the first part its going to play the first roll dispersing the impact into a larger area so that the internal foam can manage that impact. If you have a really flexible soft shell its going to collapse right in the area where your head hits which leaves a lot of pressure on the EPS liner which is going to be transferred to your head.Having a good strong shell is going to be a good important feature . Shoei is no stranger to making a good strong shell. Speaking of the shell they have also made it a more compact shape so its smaller then the RF 1100 and its a little bit more aerodynamic as well they have gone back to an integrated wing like you had on the RF1000 . So a little bit more compact a little bit more aerodynamic and the best thing about it is its Shoei's lightest full faced helmet SNELL certified helmet . You are looking at 3.4 pounds for a size large helmet and remember the shells are going to weigh slightly different amounts but your looking at under 3 and a half pounds significantly lighter then the RF1100 was. So a little bit more compact and light weight, Its a win win right there. There also giveing you a unique looking design right there at the base of the shell you can see it right there how it angles up and then it comes back down you have a little lip at the back here and again with stibility at speed .Shoei does extensive wind tunnel testing on all their helmets they know exactly how much air is going to flow over this helmet and exactly how its going to effect the feel and the noise levels as you are riding depending on if your on a naked bike or a bike with a windshield , what your head position is they really do their homework it really shows when you ride with one of these . Lets talk about the ventilation real quick they have changed that as well you now have a two position chin bar vent so you can open it fully or close it or leave it half way open . This works a lot like the defroster on your car its going to direct air up onto your face shield you can see the opening right there they are also including a breath deflector in the box so its going to help keep your breath off the face shield if you have a problem with fog ill talk about fog in a second. Right here above the shield you now not only have two intake chiming style vents at the top of the shell which is very similar to what you had on the RF1100 . They have added a third vent in the center which is this brow vent which operates with a small slider here , after a couple of rides you'll have that dialed in right in you'll know exactly where that slider is and it will give you additional airflow to the top of your head. Spinning it around looking at this rear wing not only does it help with aerodynamics reducing buffeting and lift its also going to help pull warm air out the back of the helmet very important to help keep you comfortable at speed and on hot summer days. You'll see its a simple slider switch at the back and there's actually 4 exhaust vents underneath there that you are opening and closing really a very simple slider which is great. The 1100 had 4 exhaust vents but you had to operate all of them individually which took a little bit longer to reach up there and open and close all of the vents so if you get caught in the rain you want to close the vents now its just a simple quick closure. Obviously these vents are a little bit more hidden under the wing so rain is not going to be nearly as much of an issue with the vents on the back of the helmet well at least on this helmet. We talked about fog and fogging on the shield the shield is actually all new I'm not going to spend a whole lot of time talking about it or im not going to try to but they have done some really unique things. First things first pin lock ready and they are actually including the insert in the box, if your not familiar with pin lock we have a whole separate video on the pin lock system essentially what your getting here is an additional face shield to instal on the inside of your helmet shield which gives you a duel pane effect and you'll have a insulation bead of air in between the outer shell and the inner shield so that when your riding your hot breath is not fogging up the inner shield this is actually slightly absorbent and its insulating the inner shield from the outer shield so that your not getting fogging issues.Its definitely a great system. Shoei is also unveiling a transitions shield which some other manufactures have had for a while and Shoei is now finally coming out with one which is a really great versatile shield that's actually going to darken when its exposed to UV rays so stay tuned for that. This is an all new shield a CWR 1 and its going to have again a wider eye port i found them to be fairly noticeable a little bit more vision especially out of the top of the shield so you guys that are on sport bikes hitting higher speeds getting into a good tuck you can actually see out of this helmet really well especially out of the top of the shield which is great . They have done a couple of things to the shield itself that are really unique ,First they used some reinforcing ribs along the top and bottom of the shield itself it helps keep the shape of the shield a little bit better when your opening and closing it and at high speeds. They have also removed the shield lock on the side of the helmet you used to have on the previous versions a little lever on the side here where you could have it open or close either lock the shield or open it into the city position now the shield lock is built into the tab that you use to open and close the shield. Close it all the way you can give it a press you can hear that very solid click when it goes into place and that's going to give a positive lock there. Now Shoeis have been known in the past , and there has been certain models that suffered from helmet whistle. And that's when the shield doesn't seal up perfectly with the helmet shell and the gasket .Now in most cases its something you can adjust out not every body understood it . Shoei has actually developed a completely new base plate system for the CWR 1 , and if you take a look at it not only is it a new system it they finished it with an almost checkered board gave it a sort of carbon fiber look to the plastic so its no longer that molded plastic look it actually has a nice finish to it. In addition they have given you this candle here that gives you several positions which is going to move the base plates forward and backwards it comes with this one at least came with the base plate in the furthest forward position and Ive ridden in the helmet it felt like there was no undue wind noise actually a fairly quiet ride but if i wanted to i could turn this or if i felt the need to you can take a small screw driver and turn this adjustment knob its actually going to pull the base plate back slightly were talking a couple millimeters at most and that's going to help pull the shield down even tighter. If you look at base plate here when i close the shield you can see those springs compressing as it goes threw the detente range and when you finally get past the last detente those springs expand a little bit sucking that shield down nice and tight against that gasket . They also have given you a duel gasket right around the area that gives you problems around the shield here. You have two layers of gasket material and right here at the top , If you want to remove the shield its the trigger on the side here you give that a pull and you just pull the shield down slightly to get that lip out of the way and then you can pull the shield off the helmet very quickly between a dark smoke or a clear or any other shield if you chose to use its very quick to change the shields out but here you can see how far the gasket comes . That gap right there between the base plate and the gasket is very small most helmets give you a lot more room there which is more room for wind noise to happen. Shoei has done a really good job with this base plate system with reinstalling it just lines up and clicks down into place. Now lets take a look at the inside of the shell and the inside of the helmet. We have a moisture locking liner locking moisture even better then the previous RF1100 did. And they give you something else that is directly from their racing results and race experiences. Emergency Quick release street cheek pads you can see the yellow right here it says emergency use only , pull red tab to remove cheek pad so in the event that you go down or your knocked incautious or have any neck injures and they want to pull the helmet off your head , EMT or other paramedics can actually grab this tab pull directly down and you can see that cheek pad comes right out of the helmet. Do that on both sides and they will be able to remove both of these simple as that which gives you that much of an opening in the base of a shell that you can actually slide the helmet off the head with out causing unwanted further injury to the neck. Another thing that they have done as well that we saw the the GT-Air is they have given you speaker pockets for communication systems well look at the crown liner in a second , but the speaker pockets if your not running a communication system or speakers are actually padded and you can actually remove this if you want to install the speakers. This is great because if you don't have speakers in the helmet this is going to prevent that opening that kind of void by your ear which can lead to more wind noise . They give you a nice little padded piece of foam so it will absorb additional noise while your riding if you are going to install something like a Sena Bluetooth system or Scala Rider you can do that you can see the speaker pocket right here on the side which is going to be fantastic for installing the speaker. Looking at the EPS liner Shoei uses what they call a duel EPS liner which means they have a firmer , some areas of the helmet have a firmer foam other areas have a more soft foam what that allows them to do is progressively absorb impact. So the soft foam is going to take up that initial impact or lighter impact if you don't hit your head too hard and the firmer foam is going to take up where the softer foam leaves off. There is another reason why they do this though the round portion of the shell here with the EPS liner is actually added after the fact when they are building the helmet and inside of that you actually have air channels you cant see that they other wise wouldn't be able to instal in the shell or the EPS liner itself as air is coming in these front vents it actually has air passages inside the EPS for that air to actually come down throughout the top of the head here and also escape warm air out the back. Very very nice ventilation system if you take a look here you can see those vents that open here on the forehead they actually don't go straight in they actually come up and kind of flow threw a couple of passage ways inside the helmet to provide the ultimate amount of airflow vs just a straight hole threw the shell of the helmet . One thing that i did find when slipping this helmet on is a slightly snug fit on the base on the opening here especially compared to the RF1100 just a little bit more effort to pull the helmet onto my head , Now i don't count that as a bad thing the reason for that is when you have a really good seal up around the base of the jaw line and around your neck its actually helping to reduce wind noise because you don't want additional wind to rush past the bottom of the opening here . You can also see that the cheek pad is contoured nicely its a really nice soft plush material they use different types of foam different density's and different type of material to keep you comfortable you see they even lined the back of the cheek pad with a mesh style material again absorbing sound and preventing any unwanted wind from flowing up and causing any additional wind noise . Another thing that i like about the changes that they've made on this helmet is the bottom of the neck roll and the cheek pads are now a complete kind of a rubberized material your not getting that fabric right on the bottom which is great for if you've set your helmet down or on a sidewalk or a bench while your stopped your not getting a bunch of dirt and stuff tracked into the fabric its more of a durable finish which i think will hold up better over time. Looking at the crown liner there are a ton of pieces going into this thing it might not look like it but its all sorts of density in foam different areas to cradle your head keep it very comfortable for long periods of time they know that guys are going to be wearing these helmets for years and years and they also know you might be wearing it for hours and hours on end so they want it to be as comfortable as possible. As far as the fit goes its Shoeis traditional intermediate oval if you have a "Shoei head" this is going to fit you very well it fits very similar to the RF 1100 other then as i mentioned a little bit more effort to get the helmet on and off but in turn it made the helmet even quieter. So definitely very comfortable. Last but not least we have off to the side some of the things that are included in the box you have a helmet bag you also have a chin curtain. Now riding in this i didn't feel like there was a whole bunch of wind coming up the chin bar you can install this if you want a little bit more protection from the elements especially when its cold its always nice to have a chin curtain breath deflector is another thing for when its cold you can instal this it will help keep your breath off the shield , you get a sticker and a user manual there's also silicone oil to lube the pivot points of the shield mechanism making sure that's operating smoothly.
Hey this is Reuben with Competition Accessories welcome to our video on What type of motorcycle helmet should i buy. There are a ton of different types of motorcycle helmets out there and I'm definitely going to spend some time on this end of the table because duel sport riding has grown increasingly over the years in popularity, and more and more people are buying bikes that they are going to take on and off road so if you've got that type of bike and your in that position where your not sure if you should go for a full off road helmet or a full faced street helmet something in between if your not sure what would work best for you stay tuned because i think this will help narrow it down. So obviously up here Ive got several different types of helmets Ive got one on my head, this is a shorty helmet , so for you guys that are minimalists that just want open road unrestricted view wind in your face obviously you know what you want you want a shorty helmet and that's fairly straight forward. This one actually has an internal sun visor so its got built in eye protection , we have tons of different ones of these on our website this is a bell but there are lots of different options for shorty's and that would be DOT approved from us so that they are going to work for you if your in a helmet law state , but minimalist helmet this one has removable ear covers so that will be nice for cold weather but obviously a shorty helmet is like i said fairly minimalist and if you know you want a shorty then you probably already know what you want. Moving on to what i have on the table we have a full off road helmet the brand new Fox V4 , then we have a duel sport helmet and then i have a modular helmet which means the front can actually flip up and open then you have your traditional full faced street helmet and then at the end we have a sort of three quarter open faced helmet which gives you just a little bit of added protection when compared to the shorty type of style. So i was going to talk a bit about duel sport riding that's really where the big question mark is what helmet do i need to ride in if I'm going you know half on road half off road or 70-30 , it really depends obviously if your looking at a Fox V4 and this is going to be a high end off road helmet this is designed for racing so motocross guys super cross trail riding it works really good as well also because its light weight with an aggressive style helmet like this like the Fox V4 your going to get a ton of aggressive ventilation remember this is designed for racing so traditionally when your out there racing and even if your racing in 30 degree morning and out there working your probably sweating because of that you cannot close any of the vents on most off road helmets so you've got to keep that in mind . If your buying this to do more relaxed trail riding or some street and some off road and it might be some colder weather you cant close the vents , you've got a large eye port here and obviously your going to have to wear goggles have your eye protection as well and that's going to allow a ton of air through so in cold weather it might make you a bit chilly especially if your not working as hard and your not racing . What that does on the flip side though is that flows a ton of air for really hot conditions or if your doing a lot of aggressive types of trail riding where you might be tackling some mountain passes or fire roads that lead you up into trails that maybe are a little bit more challenging. A dedicated off road helmet has its advantages a very large eye port and the ability to use goggles off road goggles are going to do a great job at not fogging on you especially if your working hard allowing that air to circulate around the goggles its definitely going to help and unrestricted view is also a big plus as well especially when off-roading and on trails you'll need to be able to see whats right in front of you and you'll need to see the trail ahead good peripheral to make sure you don't run into a tree ,Lots of good reasons why you want a good view out of the helmet. The Fox V4 is made out of carbon fiber so it happens to be very very light weight , obviously dedicated off road helmets range greatly in the price you have to kind of figure out what fits in your price range your budget and go to that route if your doing the majority of your riding off road . On highway this is going to work Ive ridden in an off road helmet at 70 or 80 miles an hour but it will not be quite as aerodynamic the visor is going to catch a little bit more air, you'll notice that the visor is nice and low on the helmet and because of that it does have air passages to let that through but you know at 70 miles an hour on the highway that's not what this was designed for and if your doing a head check looking to the sides this will catch a bit of wind and it is a bit noticeable when your on the highway. Now the next one i have is the Fly Trekker its a sort of hybrid a duel sport helmet there's several types of duel sport helmets several different models definitely a wide range of price ranges and its probably the most growing segment of motorcycle helmets currently. There are more and more manufactures that have released more helmets and its simply like i said at the beginning of the video more and more duel sport riders out there . So the advantage of the duel sport helmet is its taking a clear visor that you put over your face, the visor peak over the top of the helmet its designed to flow more aerodynamically on the road you can see there's much larger openings to allow air to flow up underneath and across the back of the helmet so its not catching quite as much air as the dedicated off road helmet , i also want you to notice its shorter than its off road counter part. In most cases these are going to be shorter it doesn't effectively block the sun as much but the main reason that an off road helmet has a visor like that is yes it does block the sun but for blocking roost so in a race if someone in front of you is really getting on the throttle its going to kick up all sorts of rocks and roost mud all those different kinds of things you can duck underneath that and the visor is going to block it where as this is more designed for you know blocking the sun and it does also function if your following someone and they kick up a rock or something you can turn your head and block it from going into your face . So the advantage here is you have a full faced visor so for highway use you can drop this down and its going to provide a more aerodynamic flow through the wind and its also going to protect a little bit better from bugs and rocks and things like that. Now most duel sports will also accommodate goggles you can open this up run the goggle strap around the back and the eye port is large enough to get some goggles underneath there are some exceptions to that you'll want to watch our detailed review on which ever one that you are interested in to see if the goggles will fit or not in some cases you have to completely remove the visor itself just to get it to work but i know with the Fly Trekker your able to get the straps underneath and you can run goggles for the extreme more off roading conditions for going more off roading then not. Also the ventilation on a duel sport helmet it is going to be adjustable , now you'll have the ability to close the vents so for those colder weather rides you can close those up and stay a little bit warmer inside the helmet and if your looking to do sort of 50/50 riding this is a great option you know it works well on road and works well off road also.Another thing that i love about the, the last thing I'm going to say about duel sport helmets is the visibility out of it very similar to the off road helmet have a very large eye port lots of room top to bottom good peripheral vision so you can see whats right in front of you you can see your gages really easily and have a really unrestricted view out of the helmet which makes it really nice . Next one up that a lot of people kind of find themselves some what considering a lot of times whether your a street rider or a duel sport rider and this is going to be a modular helmet . Now the advantages of a modular helmet are many, a lot of people that really prefer them especially if they wear eyeglasses underneath the helmet that's because you can obviously get the helmet on and off with out the front down and you can easily remove and put on your sun glasses or your seeing glasses with the helmet on, so its a lot more comfortable for guys that wear glasses , its also very convenient if your coming to a stop and your talking to some one raise this up and its easier to communicate at a gas station if your stopped take a drink if your a smoker you can still smoke with your helmet on so lots of convenience features for the modular helmet . Obviously it gives you the protection of a full faced helmet when you close it down its going to latch into place and its going to give you that aerodynamic full faced street look. Now I'm generalizing here but most of the time a modular helmet such as this is going to be heavier then its normal full faced cousin and that's just because of the latching mechanisms the hinges there are some additional parts that they have to use to build these helmets and because of that there is a little bit more weight on the top of your head if you have it in the open position there's a lot of weight on the top of the helmet so that could make it a little bit top heavy , so you know it depends on what type of riding your going to be doing . Now like i said I'm generalizing here there are some high end modular helmets that weigh in at the same or even less then a lot of full faced street helmets it really just depends on how much your willing to spend and what style of helmet your going to want . As far as visibility out of this helmet it really just depends on the brand , there are a few out there Nolan and Schuberth are some that come to mind that have nice large eye ports larger then most full faced street helmets so again you can have really unrestricted view out of those helmets where as something like this Bell Revolver EVO which is a more traditional full face shield so its going to be very similar to your traditional street helmet. A lot of modular helmets also include an internal sun visor so that's another really convenient feature for you guys that are going from night to day or day to night your commuting or what ever type of riding you plan on doing so your not always constantly going to exchange that outer face shield obviously there are some full face helmets that also offer this feature as well at the helmet that I'm have on , there's several different helmets that offer that. Modular helmets are great for some street use and light duel sport riding i hesitate to recommend for guys that are really doing some tackling some real trails and some off road just simply for the light factor and because you typically don't have such a wide eye port as something like the Fly Trekker over here that's right next to it, so keep that in mind you also wont be able to run goggles . So this outer face shield the fog coating that bell puts on there , you know if your working really hard and sweating if you have sort of a slow pace on some tough terrain the full faced face shield wont quite cut it when it comes to riding off road and keeping your vision clear even with an anti fog coating. Lastly we have the full faced helmet up here which is a Shoei RF1100 obviously there are so many different full faced helmets to choose from , the RF1100 is one of my favorites its a do it all its great helmet to tour in, commuting , you can take it to the track its got a great aerodynamic shape so you can kind of do everything with the RF1100 , and just to kind of generalize with full faced helmets just to begin with probably from all the ones that we have looked at its definitely going to be the quietest in general . There are some really noisy full faced helmets out there there are some very quiet modular helmets out there but if were generalizing here typically the full face helmet is going to be the quietest and its also going to seal up really nicely because there are no seams where the chin bars coming down a one piece design obviously you can open and close the vents on those full faced helmets and they are typically aerodynamic so your going to flow through the air nice and quietly and smoothly. There's also going to be very smooth head checks so when your turning your head from side to side there's no visor peak to catch in the wind as your riding . So full faced helmets i would say the majority of street riders could very well be comfortable riding in , some people tend to get a little claustrophobic when they try on a full faced helmet especially if they are not used to wearing one and that's where an open faced design would be a little bit more comfortable for somebody obviously this is going to be one of the more protected options out there because you have a one piece chin bar which is integrated into the actual shell itself and if you come down on your face you'll fully protected here so definitely something to keep in mind when your shopping around for a motorcycle helmet. On the end here we have a three quarter helmet this is an open faced style design that actually wraps around the side of your head and around the back you actually have some cheek pads in it . There's a lot of different options out there with 3/4 style helmets a lot of them allow you to have a face shield like this one where you have full coverage of face shield so for colder weather you'll be able to block the wind rocks and bugs wont be able to hit your face and obviously you can get tinted ones to keep you nice and comfortable , a lot of them also have a little visor peak as well so there's several different options out there . Its a great kind of compromise between an actual full faced helmet and a shorty helmet if you like the wind in your face and the open road ahead of you obviously the viability out of these is fantastic and you really get a good experience riding in one of these . This is the Nolan N43 which has the drop down internal sun visor and the trilogy version is what i have here its actually kind of a unique helmet in that its convertible.There's actually a chin bar which you can install on this helmet so you can plug this in and have kind of a hybrid of sorts if you will and actually have a chin bar which is going to block the wind and keep you protected from frontal impact.
